عَجَباًhow wondrous! لِمَنْهَلِat the fount of خَدِّهِhis cheek منْas مَوْرِدِa watering place
وَعيُوُنُهُand its springs هِيَthey are مِنْfrom عُيُونِthe eyes of الوُرَّدِthose coming to drink
How wondrous is his cheek’s fount as a watering place!
And its springs come from the eyes of those who come to drink!
تَتَزَاحَمُcrowd together الأَلْحَاظُthe gazes وَهْيَand they بِدَمْعِهَاwith their tears
رَيَّاquenched وتَصْدُرُand depart عَنْهُfrom it أَكْثَرُهَاmost of them صَدِيthirsty
The gazes throng, and with their tears
are quenched, yet most leave it thirsty.
يَاO سَاكِناًdwelling in حَبَّthe cores of القُلُوبِhearts خَوَافِقَاًthrobbing
إِنَّindeed السُّكُونَstillness بِخَافِقٍin a throbbing heart لَمْnot يُعْهَدِwas known
O you who dwell in the cores of throbbing hearts,
indeed, stillness in a throbbing heart has never been known.
مَاwhat بَالُthe condition of قَلْبٍa heart أَنْتَyou فِيهِin it ونَارُهُand its fire
فِيin مَاءِthe water of حُسْنِكَyour beauty دَائِماًalways لَمْnot تُخْمَدِwas extinguished
What ails a heart in which you dwell, while its fire
remains forever unquenched in the water of your beauty?
وَلقَدْand indeed سَلَلْتَyou drew فَلاَso do not تَكُنْbe مُتَمَسِّكاًholding back
سَيْفاًa sword مِنَfrom الأَجْفَانِthe eyelids لَيْسَis not بِمُغْمَدِsheathed
And indeed you have drawn—so do not hold back—
a sword from the eyelids that is not sheathed.
وَقَتلْتَand you killed سُلْوَانِيmy solace وَصَبْرِيَand my patience والكَرَىَand sleep
وبِمُقْلَتِيand in my eye دَمُهَاtheir blood جَرَىflowed لَمْnot تَجْحَدِyou denied it
And you have slain my solace, my patience, and sleep;
and their blood flowed in my eye—you did not deny it.
إِنْif شَاهَدَتْbeheld عَطْفَيْكَyour two sides أَغْصَانُthe boughs of النَّقَاthe sand dune
وَسَهَتْand grew heedless فَكَيْفَthen how لِسَهْوِهَاfor their lapse لَمْnot تَسْجُدِyou prostrated yourself
If the boughs of the sand dune beheld your two sides
and grew heedless, how is it you did not prostrate for their lapse?
ومُحَجَّبٍand many a veiled one أَهْدَىgave as a gift إِلىَّto me خَيَالَهُhis image
فِكْرِيmy thought لِعَجْزِbecause of the powerlessness of النَّاظِرِthe eye المُتَسَهِّدِsleepless
And many a veiled one’s image was gifted to me
by my thought, since the sleepless eye was powerless.
فَظَفِرْتُso I gained possession بِالدَّانِيof the near one القَريبِthe close one وَإِنْand even if نَأَىhe went far away
وَالنَّازِحِand the distant one النَّائِيthe far-off one وَإِنْand even if لَمْnot يَبْعُدِhe went far
So I attained the near, close one, though he was far away,
and the distant, far-off one, though he had not gone far.
