جَحَدْتُI denied الهَوَىlove حَتَّىuntil تَبَدَّتْappeared شُهُودُهُits witnesses
فَصَرَّحْتُso I openly declared بِالْكِتْمَانِabout concealment والحَقُّand the truth أَبْلَجُradiantly clear
I denied love until its witnesses appeared.
So I openly declared my concealment, while the truth shone clear.
جُفُونِيَmy eyelids مِنْfrom ذَاكَthat الحِجَابِveil قَرِيْحَةٌwounded
فَلاَso no دَمْعَtear إلاَّexcept وَهْوَwhile it بِالدَّمِّwith blood يَخْرُجُflows out
My eyelids are wounded by that veil.
So no tear flows forth except mingled with blood.
جَعَلْتُI placed عَلىupon قَلْبِيmy heart يَدَيَّmy two hands تَأَلُّمَاin pain
فَلَمْso I did not أَرَsee إِلاَّexcept جَمْرَةًan ember تَتَأَجَّجُblazes
I placed my two hands upon my heart in pain.
But I saw only an ember blazing.
جُبِلْتُI was fashioned عَلىupon حُبِّlove لِمَنْfor the one أَنَاI عَبْدُهُhis servant
فَلَحْظِيَso my gaze إِطْرَاقٌlowering the eyes وَلَفْظِيand my speech تَلَجْلُجُstammering
I was fashioned to love the one whose servant I am.
So my gaze is downcast, and my speech is stammering.
جَزَانيrewarded me هَوَاهُlove for him لَوْعَةًburning anguish وصَبَابَةًand ardent longing
وإِنِّيand indeed I إِلىof غَيْرِother than الجَزَائَيْنِthe two rewards أَحْوَجُmore in need
Love for him rewarded me with burning anguish and ardent longing.
And I am more in need of something other than those two rewards.
جَمَعْتُI joined لَهُfor him الضِّدَّيْنَthe two opposites جَمْعَa joining ضَرُورَةٍnecessity
فَجَفْنِيَso my eyelid مَمْطُورٌrained upon وَقَلْبِيَand my heart مُنْضَجُroasted
For him I joined the two opposites, compelled by necessity.
So my eyelid is drenched with rain, and my heart is roasted.
جَرَيْتُI raced مَعَwith الأَشْوَاقِlongings مِلءَthe full extent of عِنَانِهَاtheir reins
وَقُرْبُكَand nearness to you مَطْلُوبٌsought وَحُبُّكَand love for you مُنْهِجُexhausting
I raced with longings at the full stretch of their reins.
And nearness to you is sought, while love for you leaves me breathless.
جِنَانُgardens التَّجَلَّيrevelation لِلجَنَانِfor the heart مُعَدَّةٌprepared
وَلاَand no جَاهَrank أَرْقَىhigher فِيin رِضَاهُhis favor وأَعْرُجُand I ascend
The gardens of revelation are prepared for the heart.
And no rank is higher; in his favor I ascend.
جَمِيعُall المُنَىwishes فيin لَمْحةٍa glance لَوْif جَنَيْتُهَاI reaped them
فَمَرْآكَthen the sight of you أَبْهَىmore splendid فِيin العُقُولِminds وَأَبْهَجُand more gladdening
Were I to reap all wishes in a single glance,
The sight of you would still be more splendid and more gladdening to minds.
جَمَالُكَyour beauty ليfor me عَيْشٌlife وَصَدُّكَand your turning away ليfor me رَدَىًdeath
فَأَنْتَso you الَّذِيthe one who تُبْلِيyou afflict وَأَنْتَand you تُفَرِّجُyou bring relief
Your beauty is life to me, and your turning away is death to me.
So you are the one who afflicts, and you bring relief.
