أُحْكُمْpass judgment فَفِيكَfor in you العَذَابُtorment عَذْبُsweet
مَاthere is no بَعْدَafter حُلْوِsweetness الخِطَابِspeech خَطْبُcalamity
Pass judgment, for in you torment is sweet.
After the sweetness of speech, there is no calamity.

And I took no delight in you until
In you I was purified as I yearned.

مِنَfrom الحَيَاthe rain لاَnot يَكَادُit almost يَخْبُوfades
And a lightning flash put your dusky lips within my reach,
From the rain, it scarcely ever fades.

فِيin عَهْدِهِhis pledge لِلِّثَامِto the face-veil قُرْبُnearness
That is the beloved's greeting, which has arrived;
In his pledge lies nearness to the face-veil.
إِذَاwhen تَجَلَّىhe reveals himself عَلَىto النَّدَامىthe drinking companions
فَهْوَthen he is لَهُمْfor them خُضْرَةٌgreenery وَشُرْبُand drink

Then he is greenery and drink for them.
وَعَاذِلِيand my reproacher عَادَreturned لِيto me بِلُطْفٍwith gentleness
تَكَادُalmost مِنْهُfrom it الصِّبَاthe east wind تَهِبُblows
And my reproacher returned to me with a gentleness
From which the east wind all but blows.
أَضْمَرَhe harbored غَدْراًtreachery فَعَادَthen it became عُذْراًan excuse
إذْwhen رُفِعَتْwere lifted للمُحِبِّfor the lover حُجْبُveils
He harbored treachery, but it became an excuse,
When veils were lifted for the lover.
