أَيَاO طَلْعَةَcountenance القَمَرِthe moon المُبْهِجِthe joy-giving
وَيَاand O فِتْنَةَenchantment المُسْتَهَامِthe lovesick one الشَّجِيthe sorrowful
O countenance of the joy-giving moon,
and O enchantment of the lovesick, sorrowing one,
بِمَاby what بَيْنَنَاbetween us مِنْof عُهُودِvows الهَوَىlove
إِذَاwhen جُزْتِyou pass through جَيْرُوتَJayrut بِيto me عَرِّجِturn aside
by the vows of love between us,
when you pass through Jayrut, turn aside to me.
بَنَفْسَجُviolet صُدْغَيْكَyour two temples قَدْindeed لاَحَappeared ليِto me
فَبَشَّرَنيso it gave me glad tidings بالَّذِيof that which أَرْتَجِيI hope for
The violet of your temples has appeared to me,
and brought me glad tidings of what I hope for.
فَإِنَّfor indeed البَنَفْسَجَthe violet تَفْسِيرُهُits meaning
كَمَاas قَدْindeed عَلِمْتُI have learned بِنَفْسِيin my own person أَجيِI come
For the violet's meaning is,
as I have learned, "I come in person."
فَكَمْfor many a لَيْلَةٍnight بِتُّI spent the night أَطْوِيI fold يَدِيmy hand
عَلَىover كَبِدِيmy liver مِنْfrom جَوَىًlove's anguish مُنْضِجِsearing
For many a night I have spent pressing my hand
over my liver, from a longing that sears.
فلاَso do not تَمْزِجَنْmix (emphatic) بِدَمِيwith my blood عَبْرَتِيmy tear
وَرِيقُكَand your saliva ليfor me بِالكُؤُوسِin the cups امْزِجِmix
So do not mix my tear with my blood,
but mix your saliva for me in the cups.
