مَنَعَتْهَاkept her الصِّفَاتُthe attributes والأَسْمَاءُand the names
أَنْfrom تُرَىbeing seen دُونَwithout بُرْقُعٍa veil أَسْمَاءُAsma
Attributes and names have kept her
from being seen without a veil—Asma.
قَدْindeed ضَلَلْنَاwe went astray بِشَعْرِهَاin her hair وَهْوَand it منْهَاpart of her
وَهَدَتْنَاand guided us بِهَاthrough her لَهَاto her الأضْوَاءُthe lights
We have gone astray in her hair, though it is part of her;
and through her the lights have guided us to her.
كَيْفَhow بتْنَاwe spent the night مِنَfrom الظَّمَأthirst نَتَشَاكَىwe complain to one another
يَاO لِقَوْمِيfor my people وَفىand in الرِّحَالِthe saddlebags المَاءُwater
How did we spend the night complaining to one another of thirst,
O my people, when water is in the saddlebags?
كَمْhow often بَكَيْنَاwe wept حُزْنَاًin grief بمَنْfor one whom لَوْif عَرَفْنَاwe had known
كَانَwould have been مِنْfrom شِدَّةِthe intensity of السُّرُورِjoy البُكَاءُthe weeping
How often we wept in grief for one—had we known,
our weeping would have sprung from overwhelming joy.
نحْنُwe قَوْمٌa people مِتْنَاwe have died وّذَلِكَand that شَرطٌa condition
فِيin هَوَاهَاlove for her فَلْيَيْئَسِso let them despair الأحْيَاءُthe living
We are a people who have died—and that is a condition
of loving her; so let the living despair.
وَأَقَامَتْand she settled نُفوسَنَاour souls فِيin حِمَاهَاher sanctuary
لاَnot بِنَاthrough us بَلْbut بِهَاthrough her لِيَصْفُوso it may become pure الصَّفَاءُpurity
And she has settled our souls within her sanctuary,
not through us, but through her, so that purity may be unclouded.
فَالمُلَبِّيso the responder إِذَاwhen دَعَتْshe calls هِيshe مِنْاfrom us
وَمُحِيبُونَهَاand those answering her بِهَاthrough her الأَصْدَاءُthe echoes
So when she calls, the one answering from among us is she;
and those answering her through her are echoes.
يَاO أَبَاAbu (father of) الخَيْرِal-Khayr (goodness) قُمْrise لَكَfor you الخَيْرُgoodness فَاطْرِبْso gladden
مَسْمَعَthe ear of الفَقْرِpoverty مِنْكَfrom you ذَاكَthat الغِنَاءُsong
O Abu al-Khayr, rise—goodness is yours—and gladden
poverty's ear with that song of yours.
لاَdo not تَفُتْmiss كَاسَكَyour cup التَّيwhich مِنْfrom لَمَاهَاher lips' dusky hue
هِيit فِيهَاfor it تَنَافَسَhave vied النُّدَمَاءُthe drinking companions
Do not miss your cup, which comes from her lips' dusky hue;
it is for this that the drinking companions have vied.
لَمْdid not أَقُلْI say قَدْindeed عَدَتْكَpassed you by كَأْسُكَyour cup لَكِنْbut
رُبَّمَاperhaps طَوَّحَتْflung away بِكَwith you الصَّهْبَاءُthe tawny wine
I did not say your cup had passed you by, but
perhaps the tawny wine has swept you away.
إنَّماonly يَشْرَبُdrinks التيthat which تَسْلُبُsteals العَقْلَthe mind
نَدَامَىdrinking companions هُمُthey لَهَاto her أَكْفَاءُequals
The wine that steals the mind is drunk only
by drinking companions who are her equals.
أَسْكَروُهَاthey made her drunk بِهِمْwith themselves كَمَاjust as أَسْكَرَتْهُمْshe made them drunk
فِيat ابْتِدَاهُمْtheir beginning بِهَاwith her فَتَمَّso became complete الوَفَاءُfidelity
They made her drunk with themselves, just as she made them drunk
at their beginning with her; thus fidelity was fulfilled.
فَجَزَاءُso recompense مِنْهَاfrom her وَمِنْهُمْand from them وِفَاقٌconcord
وَand وِفَاقٌconcord مِنْهَاfrom her وَمِنْهُمْand from them جَزَاءُrecompense
So recompense from her and from them is concord;
and concord from her and from them is recompense.
قَدْindeed تَسَمَّتْshe named herself بِهِمْafter them وَليسُواand they are not سِوَاهُاother than her
فَالمُسَمَّىso the one named أُولِئكَthose الأَسْمَاءُthe names
She has taken their names, and they are none other than she;
so the one named is those names.
