نَعَمْyes هَذِهِthis الدَّارُthe dwelling الَّتيwhich أَنْتَyou تَطْلُبُyou seek
إِلَىto أَيْنَwhere عَنْهَاaway from it يَالَكَO—may yours be الخَيْرُgoodness تَذْهَبُyou go
Yes, this is the dwelling that you seek.
Where are you going, away from it—may good be yours?
أَعَنْaway from (questioning) دَارِthe dwelling of لَيْلَىLayla بَعْدَafter مَاthat بَانَappeared بَانُهَاits bān (moringa) trees
وَفَاحَand wafted شَذَاthe fragrance of أَنْفَاسِهَاher breaths تَتَحَجَّبُyou veil yourself
From Layla’s dwelling, after its bān trees have appeared,
and the fragrance of her breaths has wafted—do you veil yourself?
لَقَدْindeed سَمَحَتْgladly consented رُوحِيmy soul بُقْربِfor nearness to مَزَارِهَاher place of visitation
بفُرْقَةِto separation from جِسْمٍa body لَمْdid not تَزَلْcease فِيهِin it تَرْغَبُit desires
Indeed, my soul, to draw near her place of visitation, has gladly consented
to part with a body it has never ceased to desire.
وَهَلْand (question particle) كَانَتِwere الأَجْسَادُbodies إِلاَّanything but مَطِيَّنَاour mounts

And were bodies anything but our mounts,
bringing the soul near to her in spirit as they draw near?
نَعَمْyes ذَلِكَthat المَعْنَىthe meaning الَّذِيwhich أَشْرَقَتْshone بِهِthrough it
بُدُورُthe full moons of سَنَاهَاher radiance بَعْدمَاafter عَنْكَaway from you تَغْرِبُthey set
Yes, that is the meaning through which shone
the full moons of her radiance, after setting beyond your sight.
وَلاَحتْand they appeared وَهَلْand (question particle) يَوْماًever تَوَارَتْthey hid themselves وَإِنَّمَاbut rather
بِتَنْزِيهِهَاby declaring her transcendent عَنْbeyond ذَاكَthat طَرْفِيmy gaze يُكَذِّبُgives the lie
And they appeared—were they ever hidden? Rather,
my gaze denies that, declaring her beyond such things.
