واجْعَلِand make زَمَانَكَyour time كُلَّهُall of it أَفْرَاحَاjoys
Hasten in the morning to the keeper of the morning draught,
And make all your time joyous.
وَأجِلِand pass around التَّيthat which تَجْلوdispels هُمُومَكَyour cares فيin الدُّجَىthe gloom
حَتّىuntil تَرَىyou see لِظَلاَمِهِfor its darkness إِصْبَاحَاdawn
And pass around the wine that dispels your cares in the gloom,
Until you see a dawn for its darkness.
يَاO طَالبَseeker of الرَّاحَاتِthe comforts لَيْسَdoes not يَنَالُهَاattain them
إِلاَّexcept الَّذِيthe one who فِيin الرَّاحِthe palms يَجْلُوmakes gleam الرَّاحَاthe wine
O seeker of comforts, none attains them
Save one who makes wine gleam in his palms,
أَوْor مُغْرَمٌa lover أَعْطَىgave الصَّبَابَةَpassion حَقَّهَاits due

Or a lover who has given passion its due,
Whose yearning calls him to it face to face.
نَشْوَانُintoxicated مِنْfrom طَرَبِrapture الصِّبَاyouth فَكَأَنَّهُso he is like

Drunk with the rapture of youth, he is like
A branch bending at ease with the east wind.
أَوْor مَاnot تَرَىyou see عُجْمَwordless الحَمَائِمِthe doves لَحْنُهَاtheir song
قَدْindeed رَاحَbegan يُفْصِحُspeaks clearly فِيof الهَوىَlove إِفْصَاحَاeloquently
Or do you not see the wordless doves? Their song
Has begun to speak eloquently of love.
والرُّوضُand the garden فِيin حُلَلِrobes الجَدَاوِلِthe streams مُشْبِةٌresembling
حُلَلاَrobes تُجِرِّدُyou unsheathe فَوْقَهُنَّabove them صِفْاحَاsword blades
And the garden, clad in the robes of streams, resembles
Robes above which you unsheathe sword blades.
وَالرُّيحُand the wind بِالأَنْفَاسِwith the breaths تَقْصُدُseeks أَنْفُساًsouls
مَوْتَىdead فَتَبْعَثُthen revives فَيْهِمُwithin them الأَرْوَاحَاthe spirits
And the wind, with its breaths, seeks out souls
Dead, then revives the spirits within them.
فَإِذَاso if لَحَاكَrebukes you عَلَىfor البُرُوقِthe lightning flashes وَشَمِّهَاand smelling them
لاَحٍa faultfinder وَخِلْتَand you imagined الكَأْسَthe cup بَرْقاًlightning لاَحَاflashed
So if, for lightning flashes and scenting them, you are rebuked
By a faultfinder, and you fancy the cup a flash of lightning,
فَاخْفِضْthen lower جَنَاحَكَyour wing لِلمُدِيرِto the cupbearer وَغِبْand withdraw عَنِfrom
الَّلاحِيthe faultfinder تَرَىyou will see منْfrom حَالَتَيْكَyour two states نَجَاحاsuccess
Then lower your wing to the cupbearer, and withdraw from
The faultfinder; in both your states you will find success.
لَوْeven if لَمْnot يَكُنْthere were فيin السُّكْرِdrunkenness إِلاَّexcept فُرْقَةُseparation
اللاَّحيِthe faultfinder فَوَصْلُكَthen your union قَهْوَةًwine وَمِلاَحَاand beauties
Even if drunkenness brought only parting from
The faultfinder, yours would be union with wine and beauties.
أَوَلَيْسَand is it not صَحْوَكَyour sobriety دَأْبُهُits habit مِنْof شَأْنِهِits nature
أَنْto يَجْمَعَgather العُذَّالَthe reproachers وَالنُّصَّاحَاand the advisers
And is it not your sobriety's habit and nature
To gather reproachers and advisers?
فَاجْعَلْso make مَكَانَin place of الصَّحْوِsobriety سُكْراًdrunkenness تَجْتَلِيyou behold
مِنْfrom خَمْرِكَyour wine الأَحْدَاقَthe pupils والأقداحاand the goblets
So put drunkenness in place of sobriety, and behold
Through your wine, the eyes and goblets.
أَنَاI مَنْone who تَجِرْتُI traded مَعَwith الغَرَامِardent love مُجَرِّباًputting it to the test
فَوَجَدْتُso I found كُلَّall of تِجَارَتِيmy trade أَرْبَاحَاprofits
I am one who traded with ardent love, putting it to the test,
So I found all my trading yielded profits.
وَرَأَيْتَنيand you saw me غَنَّيتُI sang مِنْfrom طَرَبِrapture الهَوَىlove
وَأَخُوand the brother of التَّسَلِّيsolace بِالتَّشَكِّيthrough complaint بَاحَاspoke out
And you saw me sing with the rapture of love,
While the seeker of solace gave voice to complaint.
وَرَأَيْتُand I saw لَيْلَىLayla أَسْفَرَتْshe unveiled her face فَكَحَلْتُthen I applied kohl مِنْfrom
أَلْحَاظِهَاher glances مُقَلاًeyes مُلِئْنَthey were filled جِرَاحَاwith wounds
And I saw Layla unveil, then applied the kohl of
Her glances to eyes filled with wounds.
وجَلاَand dispelled ظَلاَمِيَmy darkness نُورُهَاher light فَكَأَنَّمَاso it was as though
أَهْدَتْshe bestowed إِلىَto ظُلُمَاتِهَاher darkness مِصْبَاحَاa lamp
And her light dispelled my darkness, as though
She had bestowed a lamp upon her darkness.
فَرَأَيْتُso I saw إِذْwhen شَاهدْتُI beheld مِنْfrom أَجْفَانِهَاher eyelids
So, when I looked, I saw in her eyelids,
Ailing though they were, sound meanings of beauty.
فَغَدَوْتُso I became نَشْوانَintoxicated المَعَاطِفَthe body's curves أمْلأُI fill
الأَكْوَانَthe worlds مِنْfrom طَرَبِrapture الوِصَالِunion مِرَاحاًexuberance
So I grew drunk, my limbs swaying, filling
The worlds with exuberance from the rapture of union.
