ماwhatever كانwas لِلهfor God مِنْof وُدٍّaffection ومِنْand of صِلَةٍa connection
ما كان لِله مِنْ وُدٍّ ومِنْ صِلَةٍ
يَظلُّremains فيamid زَحْمَةِthe press of الأَيَّامِthe days مَوْصُولاjoined
يَظلُّ في زَحْمَةِ الأَيَّامِ مَوْصُولا
What is for God's sake—affection and connection—
There is no love for Allah that remains
Remains joined amid the press of days.
Connected in the bustle of days
يظلُّremains ريّانَwell-watered مِنْby صِدقِthe sincerity of الوَفاءِfidelity بِهto it
يظلُّ ريّانَ مِنْ صِدقِ الوَفاءِ بِه
يُغْنيenriches الحياةَlife هُدىًwith guidance قدalready كانwas مأمولاhoped for
يُغْني الحياةَ هُدىً قد كان مأمولا
It stays well-watered by sincere fidelity to it,
Remains moist with the sincerity of loyalty to Him
Enriching life with guidance that had been hoped for.
Enriches life with guidance that was hoped
كأنّهas though it were الزّهَرُthe blossom الفوَّاحُfragrant روضتُهits garden
كأنّه الزّهَرُ الفوَّاحُ روضتُه
هذيthis الحَياةُlife يَمُدُّsupplies العُمْرlife's span تجميلاwith beauty
هذي الحَياةُ يَمُدُّ العُمْر تجميلا
It is like a fragrant blossom, whose garden
As if it is the fragrant flower, its meadow
Is this life; it lends beauty to life's span.
This life extends life with beautification
ماhow أَجْملَbeautiful العُمرَlife فيin بِرّthe goodness of الوفاءِfidelity وماand how
ما أَجْملَ العُمرَ في بِرّ الوفاءِ وما
أَحْلىsweet أَمانيهits hopes تقديراًin appreciation وتفعيلاand in realization
أَحْلى أَمانيه تقديراً وتفعيلا
How beautiful life is in the goodness of fidelity, and how
How beautiful is life in righteous loyalty and what
Sweet its hopes are, valued and brought to life!
Sweetest hopes in estimation and action
وماand whatever يكونis لِغَيْرfor other than اللهGod لاno عَجَبٌwonder
وما يكون لِغَيْر الله لا عَجَبٌ
إِذاif تَغَيَّرَit changes تقطيعاًthrough severance وتبْديلاand alteration
إِذا تَغَيَّرَ تقطيعاً وتبْديلا
And whatever is for other than God—no wonder
And there is no wonder for other than Allah
If it changes through severance and alteration.
If it changes segmented and modified
لاnot يُفسِدspoils الودّaffection مِثْلُlike الظنِّsuspicion يَفْتَحُopens مِنْof
لا يُفسِد الودّ مِثْلُ الظنِّ يَفْتَحُ مِنْ
شَرٍّevil ولاand does not يَرْتضيaccept للخَيْرfor good تَعْليلاan explanation
شَرٍّ ولا يَرْتضي للخَيْر تَعْليلا
Nothing spoils affection like suspicion, which opens the way to
Suspicion does not spoil love like opening from
Evil and accepts no explanation for good.
Evil and does not approve goodness reasoned
يَظَلُّkeeps يُغلِقُshutting أَبوابَthe gates of الرضاcontentment غضباًin anger
يَظَلُّ يُغلِقُ أَبوابَ الرضا غضباً
جَهْلاًin ignorance وينشُرand spreads إِفساداًcorruption وتَضْليلاand misguidance
جَهْلاً وينشُر إِفساداً وتَضْليلا
It keeps shutting the gates of contentment in anger,
It remains closing the doors of consent angrily
In ignorance, spreading corruption and misguidance.
Ignorantly and spreading corruption and misguidance
تُبْنَىis built المودَّةُaffection مِنْfrom جُهْدِthe effort of السّنينَyears رضاًin contentment
تُبْنَى المودَّةُ مِنْ جُهْدِ السّنينَ رضاً
ويَهْدِمُand tears down الظنُّsuspicion ماwhat نَبْنِيهwe build it تَعْجِيلاhastily
ويَهْدِمُ الظنُّ ما نَبْنِيه تَعْجِيلا
Affection is built through years of effort, in contentment,
Loyalty is built from the effort of years, consent
Yet suspicion hastily tears down what we build.
And suspicion demolishes what we build hastily
وتُشْرِقُand shines النَّفسُthe soul منfrom نُورthe light of الهُدىguidance أَملاًwith hope
وتُشْرِقُ النَّفسُ من نُور الهُدى أَملاً
حقّاًtrue ويمْلؤُهُاand fills it ظنُّthe suspicion of الهوىdesire قَيلاwith hearsay
حقّاً ويمْلؤُهُا ظنُّ الهوى قَيلا
And the soul shines with the light of guidance, filled with hope,
And the soul shines from the light of guidance, hope
True hope; yet desire's suspicion fills it with hearsay.
True and fills it the suspicion of passion, saying
يَظلُّremains بالظنِّthrough suspicion صَدْرُthe breast of المرءِa person مُضطرباًtroubled
يَظلُّ بالظنِّ صَدْرُ المرءِ مُضطرباً
" بالقيلwith hearsay والقالand gossip " تَحْويراًthrough distortion وand تأوِيلاinterpretation
" بالقيل والقال " تَحْويراً و تأوِيلا
Through suspicion, a person's breast remains troubled,
It remains with suspicion the chest of man disturbed
By 'he said, she said,' by distortion and interpretation.
"With saying and talking" deception and interpretation
يَجْلوclears away التَّبَيُّنُverification ماwhat فيin الصَّدرِthe breast منof رِيَبٍdoubts
يَجْلو التَّبَيُّنُ ما في الصَّدرِ من رِيَبٍ
ويحفظُand preserves الودَّaffection مَجْلوّاًunclouded ومأمولاand hoped for
ويحفظُ الودَّ مَجْلوّاً ومأمولا
Verification clears away the doubts within the breast,
Clarification dispels what is in the chest of doubt
And preserves affection, unclouded and hoped for.
And keeps love clear and hoped for
يَبْنيbuilds التُّقىpiety النُّصحَsincere counsel بينamong الناسpeople نَهْجَas a path of وَفَاfidelity
يَبْني التُّقى النُّصحَ بين الناس نَهْجَ وَفَا
ويَحْسبand considers الظنُّsuspicion نهجَthe way of النصحsincere counsel تجهيلاa charge of ignorance
ويَحْسب الظنُّ نهجَ النصح تجهيلا
Piety builds sincere counsel among people as a path of fidelity,
Godliness builds advice between people a loyalty method
But suspicion takes the way of counsel as a charge of ignorance.
And suspicion counts the advice method as ignorance
يظَلُّremains بِالنُّصْحِthrough sincere counsel حَبْلُthe cord of الوُدِّaffection مُتَّصِلاًjoined
يظَلُّ بِالنُّصْحِ حَبْلُ الوُدِّ مُتَّصِلاً
بِراًin kindness وصَفْواًand purity وإحساناًand beneficence وتنْوِيلاand giving
بِراً وصَفْواً وإحساناً وتنْوِيلا
Through sincere counsel, the cord of affection remains joined,
It remains with advice the cord of love connected
In kindness, purity, beneficence, and giving.
Righteous, pure, benevolent and interpretive
كمْhow often مَزّقhas torn apart الظنُّsuspicion مَنْthose whom قَدْalready كَانَwas يجمعهمuniting them
كمْ مَزّق الظنُّ مَنْ قَدْ كَانَ يجمعهم
صدقُthe truth of الهُدىguidance ووفاءًand fidelity كانwas مبذولاًgiven
صدقُ الهُدى ووفاءً كان مبذولاً
How often has suspicion torn apart those once united by
How much has suspicion torn those who
The truth of guidance and fidelity that was given!
Truth of guidance and loyalty had united
حَالتْchanged بِهِمْfor them صُورُthe shapes of الأيّامthe days واخْتلفَتْand varied
حَالتْ بِهِمْ صُورُ الأيّام واخْتلفَتْ
بِهِمْfor them ليالٍnights وعادand became الحبْلthe cord مَبْتُولاsevered
بِهِمْ ليالٍ وعاد الحبْل مَبْتُولا
The shapes of the days changed for them, and
Their faces of days changed with them
Their nights grew different; the cord became severed.
And nights with them, and the rope snapped, twisted
وكيفand how يَصْدقُis true ظَنٌa suspicion دُونَwithout بَيِّنَةٍclear evidence
وكيف يَصْدقُ ظَنٌ دُونَ بَيِّنَةٍ
تردُّturns back منfrom شُبْهةٍdoubt ،تَنْفيrefutes الأقَاويلاthe rumors
تردُّ من شُبْهةٍ ،تَنْفي الأقَاويلا
And how can suspicion be true without clear evidence
And how can suspicion be true without evidence
That turns one back from doubt and refutes the rumors?
Dispelling from ambiguity, negating sayings
هذاthis هوis الدِّينreligion والإِيمانُand faith بَيَّنَهُmade it clear
هذا هو الدِّين والإِيمانُ بَيَّنَهُ
لناto us الكتابُthe Book بياناًin an explanation ليسis not مجهولاًobscure
لنا الكتابُ بياناً ليس مجهولاً
This is religion and faith; it was made clear
This is the religion and faith, the Book clarified it
To us by the Book, in an explanation that is not obscure.
For us, not unknown explanation
فأيْنَwhere, then ، ويْحيَalas for me ، أنْداءُthe dewdrops of الظِّلالthe shadows وقَدْand already
فأيْنَ ، ويْحيَ ، أنْداءُ الظِّلال وقَدْ
سَرَىdrifted النَّسيمُthe breeze بهاthrough them بُشرىwith glad tidings وتهْليلاand exultation
سَرَى النَّسيمُ بها بُشرى وتهْليلا
Where, then—alas for me—are the dewdrops of the shadows, when
So where, alas, are the shadows' echoes when
The breeze has drifted through them with glad tidings and exultation?
The breeze has spread good news and praises
تُلقيspreads النَّميمةُtale-bearing أَلوانَshades of الفسادِcorruption وقدand may
تُلقي النَّميمةُ أَلوانَ الفسادِ وقد
تُخْفيconceals الحقيقةَthe truth تزويراًthrough falsification وتهويلاًand exaggeration
تُخْفي الحقيقةَ تزويراً وتهويلاً
Tale-bearing spreads shades of corruption, and may
Gossip casts shades of corruption, and it may
Conceal the truth through falsification and exaggeration.
Hide the truth, falsifying and intimidating
تُزَيِّنَmakes attractive الشرَّevil بينamong الناسِpeople ! تَقْطَعُsevers منsome
تُزَيِّنَ الشرَّ بين الناسِ ! تَقْطَعُ من
وشائجٍbonds ! تَقْتُلkills الإنسانَhuman beings تقتيلاَwith utter slaughter
وشائجٍ ! تَقْتُل الإنسانَ تقتيلاَ
It makes evil attractive among people! It severs
It decorates evil among people! It severs from
Bonds! It slaughters human beings.
Ties! It kills man, executing
ماemphatic particle بينbetween غِيْبةِthe backbiting of مُغْتابٍa backbiter وفِرْيَتِهِand his slander
ما بين غِيْبةِ مُغْتابٍ وفِرْيَتِهِ
تفرّقَbecame divided الناسُpeople تشتيتاًthrough scattering وتضليلاand misguidance
تفرّقَ الناسُ تشتيتاً وتضليلا
Between a backbiter's backbiting and his slander,
What is between the backbiting of a backbiter and his betrayal
People became divided, scattered and led astray.
People separated confused and misguided
تمزَّقتwas torn apart رِحمٌkinship مَوْصُولةٌconnected بِهِمِto them
تمزَّقت رِحمٌ مَوْصُولةٌ بِهِمِ
فَبَاتَso it became لحْمُهُمُtheir flesh مَيْتاًdead ومأكولاand devoured
فَبَاتَ لحْمُهُمُ مَيْتاً ومأكولا
The kinship that bound them was torn apart,
A connected womb was torn with them
So their flesh lay dead and devoured.
So their flesh became dead and edible
نُعْمىa blessing مِنfrom اللهGod !حُسْنُgoodness of الظنّopinion بابُa gate to تُقىًpiety
نُعْمى مِن الله !حُسْنُ الظنّ بابُ تُقىً
يُدنيbrings near الحقيقْةthe truth أوor يَنْفيdispels الأباطيلاfalsehoods
يُدني الحقيقْة أو يَنْفي الأباطيلا
A blessing from God! Thinking well of others is a gate to piety,
Blessing from Allah! Good suspicion is the gate of piety
Bringing truth near or dispelling falsehoods.
That brings near the truth or negates falsehoods
وإِنَّهand indeed it is الصِّدقُtruthfulness يَجْلوreveals كُلَّevery خَافيةٍhidden thing
وإِنَّه الصِّدقُ يَجْلو كُلَّ خَافيةٍ
ويُنْزِلُand settles الحقَّthe truth فيwithin الأَحْناءِthe inner folds تَنْزيلاfirmly
ويُنْزِلُ الحقَّ في الأَحْناءِ تَنْزيلا
And it is indeed truthfulness; it reveals every hidden thing,
And it is the truth that clarifies everything hidden
And settles truth firmly within the inner folds.
And reveals the truth in all places revealed
صدقٌtruthfulness ونُصْحٌand sincere counsel وصَفْوٌand purity فيin النفوسsouls بَدَاappeared
صدقٌ ونُصْحٌ وصَفْوٌ في النفوس بَدَا
عَزْماًas resolve يَظَلُّremains مَعَwith الإيمانِfaith مَبْذولاexerted
عَزْماً يَظَلُّ مَعَ الإيمانِ مَبْذولا
Truthfulness, sincere counsel, and purity appeared in souls
Sincerity, advice, and purity appeared in souls
As resolve continually exerted alongside faith.
A resolve that remains with faith offered
لاnot يَربْطُbinds النَّاسَpeople فيin الإسلامIslam غَيْرother than عُرىthe bonds of
لا يَربْطُ النَّاسَ في الإسلام غَيْر عُرى
عَهْدٍa covenant توثَّقَbecame firm تكريماًin honor وتفضيلاand favor
عَهْدٍ توثَّقَ تكريماً وتفضيلا
Nothing binds people in Islam except the bonds of
Nothing connects people in Islam but the bond
A covenant secured in honor and favor—
Of a covenant that was honored and preferred
عَهْدٍa covenant معwith اللهGod شَدَّتهُtightened it النّفوسُsouls تُقىًin piety
عَهْدٍ مع الله شَدَّتهُ النّفوسُ تُقىً
جيلاًa generation يَمُدُّsustains علىalong حَبْلthe cord of الوفاfidelity جيلاa generation
جيلاً يَمُدُّ على حَبْل الوفا جيلا
A covenant with God, drawn tight by souls in piety,
A covenant with Allah that souls tightened in piety
Generation sustaining generation along the cord of fidelity.
A generation that extends the rope of loyalty a generation
