المُجْرمونthe criminals اسْتَكْبرواgrew arrogant فيin الأرضthe earth مَنْwho
المُجْرمون اسْتَكْبروا في الأرض مَنْ
سَيَرُدُّwill repel كَيْدَscheming المُجْرِمِينَthe criminals الجُحَّدِthe obstinate deniers
سَيَرُدُّ كَيْدَ المُجْرِمِينَ الجُحَّدِ
The criminals have grown arrogant on earth—who
The criminals were arrogant on earth, who
Will repel the plots of the criminals who deny the truth?
Will repeal the scheme of the criminals, the deniers
فِئةٌa company مُعَطَّرَةُperfumed الجِهَادِjihad غَنِيَّةٌrichly endowed
فِئةٌ مُعَطَّرَةُ الجِهَادِ غَنِيَّةٌ
للهfor God تَنْهَجُfollows بِالسَّبيلalong the path الأَقْصَدthe most direct
لله تَنْهَجُ بِالسَّبيل الأَقْصَد
A company fragrant with jihad, richly endowed,
A group scented with jihad, rich
For God, follows the most direct path.
To God it takes the middle path
للهfor God ظاهِرةُtriumphant تُقاتِلُfights مَنْwhoever طَغَىacted tyrannically
لله ظاهِرةُ تُقاتِلُ مَنْ طَغَى
فيin الأرضِthe earth أَوor تُعْليraises لِواءَthe banner of مُحَمَّدِMuhammad
في الأرضِ أَو تُعْلي لِواءَ مُحَمَّدِ
For God, triumphant, it fights whoever tyrannizes
To God the victorious fights those who transgressed
On earth, or raises Muhammad's banner.
In earth or raises the banner of Muhammad
مِنْfrom كُلِّevery أَرْوعَvaliant man فيin الجِهَادِjihad مُجَرَّبٍseasoned
مِنْ كُلِّ أَرْوعَ في الجِهَادِ مُجَرَّبٍ
مَاضٍresolute وكُلِّand every مُصَدِّقٍbeliever مُتَجَرِّدِselfless
مَاضٍ وكُلِّ مُصَدِّقٍ مُتَجَرِّدِ
Made up of every valiant man seasoned in jihad,
Of every courageous well-tested in jihad
Resolute, and every selfless believer.
Persistent and every sincere stripping away
أَغْنىenriched الحَيَاةَlife بصدْقِهwith his sincerity وَوَلائِهِand his loyalty
أَغْنى الحَيَاةَ بصدْقِه وَوَلائِهِ
للهto God ، لمdid not يُشْرِكْassociate partners with God وَلَمْand did not يَتَردَّدِhesitate
لله ، لم يُشْرِكْ وَلَمْ يَتَردَّدِ
He enriched life with his sincerity and loyalty
Enriched life with his loyalty and allegiance
To God, neither associating partners with Him nor hesitating.
To God, he did not associate nor hesitate
مَنَحَgave الحَيَاةَlife جَمَالهاits beauty بوفائِهِthrough his fidelity
مَنَحَ الحَيَاةَ جَمَالها بوفائِهِ
وَرَوَىand watered المرابعthe meadows بالدَّمwith blood المتَوَقِّدِblazing
وَرَوَى المرابع بالدَّم المتَوَقِّدِ
He gave life its beauty through his fidelity,
Gave life its beauty with his loyalty
And watered the meadows with blazing blood.
And quenched the meadows with burning blood
وَمضَىand went onward لإِحْدَىtoward one of الحُسْنَيَيْنthe two best outcomes يَشُدُّهdraws him onward
وَمضَى لإِحْدَى الحُسْنَيَيْن يَشُدُّه
شَوْقُlonging إِلىfor أَوفىthe fullest النَّعيمbliss وأخلدِand most enduring
شَوْقُ إِلى أَوفى النَّعيم وأخلدِ
And went toward one of the two best outcomes, drawn
And went to one of the two bounties pulled
By longing for the fullest, most enduring bliss.
By yearning to the most loyal bliss and eternity
المُجْرمُونthe criminals اسْتَكْبَرواgrew arrogant فيin الأرضِthe earth مَنْwho
المُجْرمُون اسْتَكْبَروا في الأرضِ مَنْ
سَيَرُدُّwill repel مَكْرَscheming المُجْرِمthe criminal المُترَصِّدِlying in wait
سَيَرُدُّ مَكْرَ المُجْرِم المُترَصِّدِ
The criminals have grown arrogant on earth—who
The criminals were arrogant on earth, who
Will repel the scheming of the criminal lying in wait?
Will repeal the cunning of the lurking criminal
سَتَرُدُّهwill repel it فِئةُa company وَفَاءُloyalty of رِجَالِهَاits men
سَتَرُدُّه فِئةُ وَفَاءُ رِجَالِهَا
بِرُrighteousness وإِحْسَانُand kindness وخفقُand the swinging of مُهَنَّدِan Indian-forged sword
بِرُ وإِحْسَانُ وخفقُ مُهَنَّدِ
A company will repel it; its men's loyalty
It will be repealed by the group and the loyalty of its men
Is righteousness, kindness, and the sweep of an Indian-forged sword.
Righteousness, benevolence, and the fluttering banner
فِئةٌa company تُقِيمُraises عَلَىacross الزَّمانِthe ages مَنَائِراًbeacons
فِئةٌ تُقِيمُ عَلَى الزَّمانِ مَنَائِراً
مِنْfrom هَدْيِهَاits guidance ومَلاَحِماًand epic battles مِنْfrom أَزْنُدِforearms
مِنْ هَدْيِهَا ومَلاَحِماً مِنْ أَزْنُدِ
A company that raises, across the ages, beacons
A group that establishes beacons over time
From its guidance, and epics wrought by its forearms.
With its guidance and epics from weapons
وتُعِيدُand restores للإِنسَانِto humankind عِزَّتَهُits dignity التيthat
وتُعِيدُ للإِنسَانِ عِزَّتَهُ التي
ديسَتْwas trampled وتُوقُظand awakens شَوْقَهits longing مِنْfrom مَرْقدِsleep
ديسَتْ وتُوقُظ شَوْقَه مِنْ مَرْقدِ
And restores to humankind the dignity that
And returns to man his lost dignity
Was trampled, and awakens its yearning from sleep.
And awakens his longing from slumber
وتُحَطّمُand shatters الأغلالَthe shackles عَنْهُfrom it فَكَمْso how long مَضَىhas gone on الإِhumankind (first part)
وتُحَطّمُ الأغلالَ عَنْهُ فَكَمْ مَضَى الإِ
نْسَانhumankind (continuation) بَيْنَbetween مُضَلَّلٍone misled وand مُصَفَّدِone fettered
نْسَان بَيْنَ مُضَلَّلٍ و مُصَفَّدِ
And shatters its shackles—how long has human-
And shatters the shackles from him, for how much has passed, humanity
kind gone on, either misled or fettered!
Between the misguided and shackled
وَتَمدُّand extends للمُسْتَضْعَفينto the oppressed يَدَthe hand of الهُدَىguidance
وَتَمدُّ للمُسْتَضْعَفين يَدَ الهُدَى
مَدَداًas aid ونَجْدَةand succor صَادِقٍone sincere مُتَوجِّدِimpassioned
مَدَداً ونَجْدَة صَادِقٍ مُتَوجِّدِ
And extends to the oppressed the hand of guidance,
And extends to the oppressed the hand of guidance
As aid and succor from one sincere and impassioned.
Help and true aid, bringing about
فِئةٌa company كأنَّas though المِسْكَmusk مِنْfrom أنفاسِهَاits breaths
فِئةٌ كأنَّ المِسْكَ مِنْ أنفاسِهَا
مَلأَfilled الزَّمَانَthe ages وَعطَّرَand perfumed الأُفقَthe horizon النَّدِيdewy
مَلأَ الزَّمَانَ وَعطَّرَ الأُفقَ النَّدِي
A company, as though musk from its breaths
A group whose breath is as if
Had filled the ages and perfumed the dewy horizon.
Musk has filled time and scented the horizon
تمضيadvances فَيَهْتَزُّthen trembles الرَّبيعُspring بهاwith it إِذاwhen
تمضي فَيَهْتَزُّ الرَّبيعُ بها إِذا
طَلَعتْit appeared ويغنىand grows rich كُلُّevery وادٍvalley أجْرَدِbarren
طَلَعتْ ويغنى كُلُّ وادٍ أجْرَدِ
It advances, and spring stirs with it when
It goes on and spring shakes with it when
It appears, and every barren valley grows rich.
It rises and every barren valley sings
يُشْرَىglad tidings (probable intended reading) رَسُولِMessenger of اللهGod آيةa sign of رَبِّهِhis Lord
يُشْرَى رَسُولِ الله آية رَبِّهِ
للعَالمينَfor all the worlds رَحْمةmercy للمُجْهَدِfor the weary
للعَالمينَ رَحْمة للمُجْهَدِ
Glad tidings of God's Messenger, a sign of his Lord,
Quenching the Messenger of God, a sign of his Lord
For all the worlds, a mercy to the weary.
For all mankind, mercy for the striving
للهto God دَرُّexcellence (in praise) الهِنْدِIndia ! كَمْhow many مِنْof عالِمٍa scholar
لله دَرُّ الهِنْدِ ! كَمْ مِنْ عالِمٍ
دَفَعَتْshe sent forth لسَاحَتِهاinto her arena وَكَمْand how many مِنْof مُنْجِدِa rescuer
دَفَعَتْ لسَاحَتِها وَكَمْ مِنْ مُنْجِدِ
How splendid is India! How many a scholar
For God a pearl from India! So many scholars
Has she sent into her arena, and how many a rescuer!
Repelled for its court and so many helpers
بَذَلواthey gave مِنَfrom العِلْمِknowledge الزَّكيِّpure ونُورِهِand its light
بَذَلوا مِنَ العِلْمِ الزَّكيِّ ونُورِهِ
مُهَجاًlifeblood إلىtoward صِدقِsincerity of العَزِيمةِresolve واليَدِand the hand
مُهَجاً إلى صِدقِ العَزِيمةِ واليَدِ
They poured forth, from pure knowledge and its light,
They gave from the pure, brilliant knowledge
Their lifeblood toward sincerity in resolve and action.
A passion to the sincerity of determination and hand
ومَضَواand they went onward يَحثُّونَhastening الخُطىthe steps لَهباًas flame عَلىalong
ومَضَوا يَحثُّونَ الخُطى لَهباً عَلى
دَرْبٍa path إلىtoward صِدْقِsincerity of الجِهَادِjihad مُمَهَّدِpaved
دَرْبٍ إلى صِدْقِ الجِهَادِ مُمَهَّدِ
And went onward, hastening their steps, aflame, along
And they went urging steps ablaze
A path paved toward sincere jihad.
On a path to the sincerity of striving, paved
عَبَقُfragrance of الأئمَّةِthe imams والمُلُوكِand the kings عَلَىupon الرُّبىthe hills
عَبَقُ الأئمَّةِ والمُلُوكِ عَلَى الرُّبى
نَفْحُa waft of الجِنَانِgardens وعِطرِهاand their perfume المُتَجَدِّدِever-renewed
نَفْحُ الجِنَانِ وعِطرِها المُتَجَدِّدِ
The fragrance of the imams and kings upon the hills
The scent of imams and kings on tombs
Is the waft of gardens and their ever-renewed perfume.
Is the breeze of gardens and their renewed fragrance
يمضيgoes forth " مُعِينُMu'in (helper) الدِّينal-Din (the faith) " فيon جَوْلاتِهِhis rounds
يمضي " مُعِينُ الدِّين " في جَوْلاتِهِ
نُوراًas a light أَطَلَّappeared لُمدْلجٍto a night traveler وَمُشَرَّدِand a displaced person
نُوراً أَطَلَّ لُمدْلجٍ وَمُشَرَّدِ
Mu'in al-Din goes forth on his rounds,
"Assistant of the Religion" goes on his rounds
A light that appeared to a night traveler and an exile.
A light that shone for a confused and lost soul
ويَظلُّand remains " بختيارٌBakhtiyar " أَعزَّmost honored فتنحَنيso bow
ويَظلُّ " بختيارٌ " أَعزَّ فتنحَني
هامُheads of الملوكِthe kings لهbefore him وكِبْرُand the pride of الأَصْيَدِthe haughty man
هامُ الملوكِ له وكِبْرُ الأَصْيَدِ
And Bakhtiyar remains most exalted, so there bow
And "Bakhtiar" remains the most precious, kings bow to him
The heads of kings before him, and the pride of the haughty.
And the great predators surrender
وand" الدَّهلويُّal-Dahlawi " وَيَاand oh لَعزَّةِfor the glory of دينهhis faith
و" الدَّهلويُّ " وَيَا لَعزَّةِ دينه
ردَّturned back الملوكَthe kings ويَاand oh هَوانَabasement of السُؤدُدِhigh rank
ردَّ الملوكَ ويَا هَوانَ السُؤدُدِ
And al-Dahlawi—oh, the glory of his faith!
And "Al-Dahlawi", oh how mighty is his religion
He turned back kings—oh, the humiliation of high rank!
He repealed kings, oh how lowly are the arrogant
والعالمُand the scholar " السّرْSir- (name fragment) هَندِhind (name fragment) " يَاoh لجِهَادِهfor his jihad
والعالمُ " السّرْ هَندِ " يَا لجِهَادِه
بَذْلاًgiving وَيَاand oh لَلزَّاهِدِfor the ascetic المتَعَبِّدِdevoted to worship
بَذْلاً وَيَا لَلزَّاهِدِ المتَعَبِّدِ
And the scholar of Sirhind—oh, his jihad,
And the scholar "Al-Sirhindi", oh his jihad
His giving! And oh, that ascetic devoted to worship!
Giving and oh ascetic devout
ردَّrepelled الزّنادِقَةَthe heretics العُصَاةَthe rebellious وكَيْدَهُمْand their scheming
ردَّ الزّنادِقَةَ العُصَاةَ وكَيْدَهُمْ
ردّاdecisively وأخمدَand quenched فِتنَةًstrife مِنْfrom مُلحدِan atheist
ردّا وأخمدَ فِتنَةً مِنْ مُلحدِ
He repelled the rebellious heretics and their scheming,
He repealed the disobedient heretics and their schemes
Decisively, and quenched an atheist's strife.
Repealing and extinguishing the sedition of an atheist
وانْظرand look " لعرفانَat Irfan الشَّهِيدِthe Martyr " كأنَّهُas though he were
وانْظر " لعرفانَ الشَّهِيدِ " كأنَّهُ
جيشٌan army تواثَبَsurged فيthrough الذُّراthe summits and hollows والأوهُدand the hollows
جيشٌ تواثَبَ في الذُّرا والأوهُد
And look at Irfan the Martyr, as though he were
And see "the martyr Arabi", it is as if he is
An army surging through summits and hollows.
An army that stirred in homes and tents
فَتَحَopened القُلوبَhearts بِغَيْرwithout سَيْفa sword مُصْلتٍdrawn
فَتَحَ القُلوبَ بِغَيْر سَيْف مُصْلتٍ
فَهَوىso fell الفسادُcorruption وسَيفهand its sword لَمْnot يُغمدwas sheathed
فَهَوى الفسادُ وسَيفه لَمْ يُغمد
He opened hearts without a drawn sword,
He opened hearts without a drawn sword
So corruption fell, its sword still unsheathed.
So corruption fell and his sword was not sheathed
ياO " ندوةَNadwat (assembly) العُلماءِal-Ulama (the scholars) " ! ياO نَفْحَa waft of الشَّذاfragrance
يا " ندوةَ العُلماءِ " ! يا نَفْحَ الشَّذا
ياO لَهْفَةَlonging of القُصَّادِthe seekers شَوْقَyearning of العُوَّدِreturning visitors
يا لَهْفَةَ القُصَّادِ شَوْقَ العُوَّدِ
O Nadwat al-Ulama! O waft of fragrance,
O "Council of Scholars"! O scent of foliage
O longing of seekers, yearning of returning visitors!
O craving of archers, longing for the tent pole
نَسَبُa lineage أَبَرُّmore righteous عَلىfounded on التُقَىpiety فكأنَّهso as though it were
نَسَبُ أَبَرُّ عَلى التُقَى فكأنَّه
رَحِمُkinship يَصونُprotects ولُحمةُand a bond مِنْfrom مَولِدِbirth
رَحِمُ يَصونُ ولُحمةُ مِنْ مَولِدِ
A more righteous lineage, founded on piety, as though it were
A lineage most righteous in piety, as if it is
A kinship that protects, and a bond from birth.
A womb that protects and a kinship from birth
زَكَتَgrew pure الرِّجالُthe men عَلَىthrough الجِهَادِjihad ونُورِهِand its light
زَكَتَ الرِّجالُ عَلَى الجِهَادِ ونُورِهِ
يَاO عزَّhonor of مُنْتَسبٍone who belongs وَعِزَّةand glory of مَحِتْدِancestry
يَا عزَّ مُنْتَسبٍ وَعِزَّة مَحِتْدِ
The men grew pure through jihad and its light.
Men excelled in jihad and its light
O honor of one who belongs, and glory of ancestry!
Oh honored lineage and pride of the ancestor
للهto God دَرُّexcellence (in praise) الهِنْدِIndia ! نورُlight of كواكِبٍstars
لله دَرُّ الهِنْدِ ! نورُ كواكِبٍ
زُهْرٍbright ودفقُand the outpouring of مجاهدٍa warrior ومُسدِّدِand one who guides aright
زُهْرٍ ودفقُ مجاهدٍ ومُسدِّدِ
How splendid is India! The light of stars
For God a pearl from India! Light of stars
Bright, and the outpouring of a warrior and a guide.
Blossoms and flow of mujahideen and supporters
دُرَرُpearls مِنْamong العُلمَاءِthe scholars كَيفhow أَعُدُّهمcan I count them
دُرَرُ مِنْ العُلمَاءِ كَيف أَعُدُّهم
أَعيتْexhausted حُشُودُهمُtheir multitudes خَيَالَimagination of مُعدِّدِone who counts
أَعيتْ حُشُودُهمُ خَيَالَ مُعدِّدِ
Pearls among scholars—how can I count them?
Pearls from scholars, how can I count them
Their multitudes have exhausted the imagination of one who counts.
Their crowds exhausted the imagination of a counter
مَهَدواthey paved الدُّروبthe paths لكلِّfor every يومٍday أبلجٍradiant
مَهَدوا الدُّروب لكلِّ يومٍ أبلجٍ
دَامٍbloodied وand يَومِa day of شهادةٍmartyrdom متفرِّدِmatchless
دَامٍ و يَومِ شهادةٍ متفرِّدِ
They paved the paths for every radiant day,
They paved the roads for every shining lasting day
Bloodied, and for a matchless day of martyrdom.
And a day of singular martyrdom
