The call to prayer resounded! So, O pulpits, echo

In longing for the green gardens, and repeat the refrain.

The world bowed humbly before it! Oh, its majesty,

And its beauty, and the majesty of that scene!

All the meadows submitted humbly to God,

From a valley astir to the uplands.

And the breezes of moist dawn wafted it along

As fragrance, dewdrops, and Muhammad's verses.

And as though the birds' chirping were dewy freshness

That fluttered, and the praise of hills and hollows.

And as though the flowers' chirping kept asking:

'O meadows, what is hidden in tomorrow?'

The luxuriant rose breathed, as though it were

A fragrance lavishing its rose-tinted perfume.

It casts upon the courtyards blood from its own blood,

To say: 'O world, look out and bear witness!'

So here are the fields of jihad; we replenish them

With surging waves of ever-renewed blood.

And here is the believers' watchpost, and a field

For their jihad, or a sign for one who follows guidance.

The horizons look about and find none but

One hastening to answer His call, or setting out at dawn.

And the dewy morning breathed, and there hovered

Among the homes, hopes and the appearance of martyrs.

They hasten to the House, illumined by guidance,

Rejoicing in an encounter or an appointed meeting.

So its grounds are a watchpost for a believer,

Springing eagerly, or a believer praying through the night.

    History continues within its courtyards,

With Islam's prophethood and the fresh covenant.

They hasten to the pure sanctuary; their footsteps

Are light cleaving the darkness of a black night.

How fine the early setting-out! Such is a believer's resolve,

And radiant Friday—the yearning of one rightly guided.

And light from Ramadan breaks forth upon

Its courtyards, a flood from a bountiful source.

Oh, the virtues! All have been gathered

For those who fast, stand in prayer, and keep sleepless vigil.

How wondrous the House—a house of prophethood,

And true martyrdom, and the coming of pioneers.

And as though Abraham—oh, what a prayer was his!—

Called and said: 'Here is Muhammad's faithfulness.'

Those who fast and worship—their footsteps

Are insistent longing and a worshipper's yearning.

So it is as though they forever yearn for a garden,

Green and radiant, and righteousness more enduring.

And they came to God's House, where there bows

A more devout heart, and a throb from the very vitals.

You see their processions there, as though they were

Bright stars, or the risings of Farqad.

The call to prayer was raised; they came, their ranks

Closely packed, and their hearts yearning for tomorrow.

God is greatest! Then they bent in bowing,

And God hears the heartbeat of the spiritually enraptured.

They rose and dropped into prostration; you see nothing

But the humble devotion of prostrate worshippers.

    Gunfire thundered! Behind every bullet

A tyrant seasoned in most wretched error.

The criminals! Oh, the horror of a crime

So great! And oh, the criminal lying in wait!

How many a criminal on earth has never been devout, nor

Bowed humbly to his Creator, nor worshipped!

Gunfire thundered: here a martyr with blasted

Ribs, and one struck down, left unaided.

    Severed limbs fly; every victim

Laments to their Maker the humiliation of those who pray at night.

And the severed limbs converged across its skies,

From every region laid open to an aggressor.

From Kashmir's land comes the cry of its blood,

From Bosnia's land, a cry that found no aid.

From every massacre, the remnants of a nation

Are flung and scattered through the ashen sky.

Muslim blood has become fair game

For criminals, for every corrupting aggressor!

And our homes have been thrown open to them,

And our hearts have been opened to an atheist's temptation.

The criminals are a gang spreading

Across the earth out of the greed of rebellious desire.

Oh, the Jews! Behind every calamity

Are their plots and their hand—oh, what an evil hand!

They gathered from their alliances, within their ropes,

States, then surged with thunderous calamity.

Whoever dreamed of peace with the Jews—

That is the dream of an ignorant exaggerator.

They coveted, as all error coveted,

The Muslims, their homeland, the uplands.

No! They do not want peace, nor do

The Americans, nor an aggressor's instincts.

They made peace a deception; with it they set

A snare spread for one bewildered and hesitant.

Where is the world order, and where, O

World, are the rights of those massacred and expelled?

Where are justice and the promises? How can one hope

For justice from a prowling wolf and lions?

O my nation, if you do not awaken, then behold

The waves of a night advancing and spreading.

Gather your ranks, nation of Islam, like

A building bound tight by a firmer covenant.

Enter the fields of jihad, and echo

The longing for martyrdom in that cause, and rise!

O nation of Islam, that is a trust

And a testimony for God! Rise and bear witness!

O nation of Islam, O hope of the peoples,

All of them! Fulfill your covenant! Come to their aid!

No! None will establish justice but a believer

Who was true to God and said: 'O my soul, go forth!'

    O abode of al-Khalil, a greeting from a soul

That has known the majesty of your blazing jihad.

    Only yesterday you were rich

In giving, radiant in your generosity and your hand.

You cleansed your land of the flood of their filth,

And watered it with purity from your fresh blood.

Today you have exalted faithfulness; here are

    Bands surging toward martyrdom—rejoice!

Tomorrow you will see unbroken processions,

Advancing for God, and the coming of pioneers.

Victory approaches like the illuminating dawn,

Glad tidings for you, and a sign for one who follows guidance.

Turn toward al-Aqsa! Your longing is still

Pure, and your covenant is still tomorrow's hope.

Turn there, and together renew a more faithful covenant

For an encounter that fulfills the promise faithfully.
