The solace of hearts and a place of honor.

O flower of the world and breaths of love,

And flutter of longing and heartbeat of tenderness!

Your sciences blossomed in life and wafted

The scent of roses and the breath of basil.

For how often you sent forth into the world a nation

Of geniuses in learning and the arts!

In every field you raised beacons

    And pulpits, and raised edifices.

How often you shattered error and plunged into

Deep waters and the terrors of time's vicissitudes!

Whatever desires may change upon your soil,

Your covenant will remain the bond of faith.

An abode clothed in a nation's glory—

How many crowns history has adorned it with!

A history of Islam and the wealth of a nation,

Or the splendor of hopes and the glory of being.

Woe is me! They came to you on battleships like fortresses,

And a throng of machines and riders.

They advanced with their tanks, with aircraft,

With a machine monstrous in its tyranny.

They advanced upon you as though a wave of

    Hurricane, darkness, and deluge.

With fire! With the missile that hurls upon her

The terror of hell and a gush of rancor.

As though the sky were hurling its flame

And the earth unleashing a volcano's wrath.

How many a boy perished amid her flames,

And a girl was folded away in sorrow!

My anguish for Baghdad, engulfed in fires

Of every kind, unceasing on Baghdan's hills!

Whenever you look, you see nothing at all but

Flames ablaze and the assault of smoke.

As though it had left in her squares

No human being and no trace of a building.

The criminal tyrants claimed that they

Had brought you impulses of benevolence:

Freedom and gentleness! Oh, woe to them!

They brought you the calamities of fire.

They brought their ambitions and a surge of ravenous greed,

Concealing them in embellishment and eloquence.

Support born of faithful, compassionate sincerity.

Then the bands of hypocrisy folded away and turned their backs,

In packs of wolves and rats.

The tyrants' injustice and the severity of tyranny.

Of you, O Iraq, and the harshness of deprivation!

They pressed hard upon you and hemmed you in, yet you endured with

Hope dawning and the dignity of stature.

The groaning of entrails and bodies,

    Stricken by severe illness—no medicine,

And no food, victims of aggression.

These millions who fell as victims

    Of injustice, blockade, and slander!

How wondrous your patience, O Iraq, under the harsh

Siege they imposed, and the calamities of abandonment!

How did you rise from siege, from wounds,

From destruction and the assault of unbelief?!

They thought that through the siege you would surely

Kneel before them and incline toward submission.

Yet you endured and did not kneel! So they thought that

A renewed war against you was inevitable.

The siege failed! All their hopes were dashed!

They rose in anger, boiling with rage,

For a monstrous crime and the bombardment of homesteads,

    With fire, missiles, and aircraft,

And with every instrument of destruction, and all the rancor

In their breasts, and the impulse to go to extremes.

So you rose from amid the siege, resounding

With stronger resolve, ranging across the battlefield.

Baghdad, alas! Such is our state

When you were afflicted! Who, do you think, is the culprit?!

Their landmarks were lost! And each one claims

The honor of heroism or a hand of benevolence.

The scales of justice were lost and vanished.

Woe is me! Where, then, is the justice of the balance?

My anguish for Baghdad! Amid her dwellings

Lava erupts in blaze and smoke.

    Baghdad, do not surrender; kindle

The flames of resolve, the leap of knights!

And blaze as a flame that pours upon the foes

The lava of hell and a volcano's wrath.

Do not despair, Baghdad, though the wait grows long,

For victory is the resolve of a steadfast spearman.

War comes in rounds, in which are revealed

The honor of covenants and the bond of faith.

So leap, and make the earth beneath their soldiers

And their equipment a blaze of fire,

And of advancing hosts, as though mountains were marching

Against them, and storms of dunes,

And crashing tempests striking the battleships of their hatred,

    And shaking pillars and cornerstones.

That is heroism! How sublime its fidelity,

From everyone who springs into the battlefield!

Baghdad! God's rope is the firmest resolve,

So hold fast! My anguish for Baghdan!

Tighten the bonds of faith! Your victory is a sign

Of God, if you are faithful in doing good.

Glad tidings keep dawning from our horizons:

The hope of hearts and the joy of the ages.
