Hold me close to you, Father! For I am

afraid! The gunfire around me is fierce.

Hold me close! Protect me! For still

their bullets pour down upon us, ever more.

I see no weapon in your hands,

no, nor in my hand a weapon of any use.

How can we face our enemy unarmed, while he

has his weapon and massed forces?

Hold me close! Hold me close! I am no coward.

My resolve, as you know, is iron.

I am of a nation built by the Messenger of God,

and by revelation and the glorious Book.

Yet humiliation is terror, for within it

warnings have wailed, and in it lies menace.

Humiliation stripped hopes from my face,

and promises vanished into the vastness.

Here are the criminals! Woe is me! Are they wild beasts

running amok, or legions and soldiers?

    كلُّ ساحٍ عواصفٌ ورعودُ

    They have come, Father! Gunfire thundered;

every open space is storms and thunder.

Do not fear, my son! Be patient! For God

decrees, by His command, whatever He wills.

    كلُّ ركنٍ نَرْجُو حِماهُ بَعيدُ

    We are alone, my son! So be patient;

every refuge whose shelter we hope for is far away.

How did we come here? How were we hemmed in?

I see no refuge to which we can return.

    ئف يأوي إلى حماه الشريدُ

    Indeed, God alone is the refuge of the fearful;

the outcast seeks shelter in His protection.

How strange, Father! They have a weapon,

deadly, its fire a blaze and fuel.

    ثمَّ دارَتْ بنا ليالٍ سُودُ

    They stripped us of it, my son! They shot at us;

then black nights circled round us.

You told me, Father: They are millions on the

earth; we are a billion, or perhaps more.

Do our kin on earth see us? Has there

risen anyone unbowed, compassionate, or valiant?

Where are our brothers? And where are our paternal cousins?

And where are our maternal uncles? Where are our grandfathers?

Gunfire came unceasingly, and death poured

in torrents; his heart-stricken cry rang out.

He pulled him behind his back; cries for help rose

from ribs, or throats, or forearms.

    Father...! Oh...! His cry faded,

and wastelands and deserts folded it away from us.

A bullet silenced him; he was hurled

into his father's arms by a heart full of hate.

He held him in a farewell embrace; the tears

were a blaze, a witness against humiliation.

A bullet silenced him, then another,

and borders folded away his dew-fresh voice.

    Every hill echoed it resoundingly,

and its echo remains fresh through time.

Yet ears were deafened, and so dozed

the eyes beneath them, and efforts slept.

He clasped him to his chest in an embrace,

pouring his tenderness into it, giving freely.

    Dew-fresh tenderness! And hope—

lost! A wilderness stretches before him.

    كلُّ دْربٍ أمامَهُ مَسْدودُ

    Every open space, amid the clamor, is a void;

every path before him is blocked.

He poured his longing over him, and there flowed

with longing from him his blood and his vein.

A hail of their bullets was poured down! Yet

a last remnant of life still lingered in him, ebbing away.

He leaned backward, and his forearms slackened,

and his proven resolve slackened within him.
