Whose is the dwelling, worn away at Khiyam?
For whom has this abode become desolate with tents?
It lies changed by the long passage of time.
Its long occupation has changed it.

The eye discerns none of its traces
The eye sees of its traces naught
save a drainage trench, like a pen-drawn line,
But lines like writing with a pen.

still sound: it encircled the dwelling till it lay gathered tight,
Salah wrapped it up and became its tenant,
as a hawk gathers pigeons in an acacia.
A Bazite built a nest in its staircase.

And three dove-like hearthstones within it,
And three like doves in it,
at their resting place, charcoal's tattoo-like marks.
At their sleeping-place the kindling of embers.

I question the dwelling, having greeted it,
I asked the abode, for I had greeted it,
about a beloved—but find it deaf.
About a beloved, but it was deafly silent.

By the dwelling's life, had there been within it
By the life of the abode! Were its people in it
its people, when tears poured from your eyes
When the tears from your eyes poured down!

in anguish, it would not have shunned a parted lover
Grieving, it would not have turned away from one
who came seeking healing, a cure for sickness.
Who came seeking a cure from sickness.

Often I ride out at dawn, my companions riding too,
Often I and my companions go early
upon a dark bay, like leather from ʿUkāẓ.
To an abode like Ukaz’s leather.

He surpassed other horses through noble blood,
The horses outdid each other with a brisk gallop
bred of Yaʿbūb and the line of Saḥam.
Between Ya'bub and the clan of Sahm.

Noble stallions' lineage culminated in him;
Among them a stallion of noble stock slept
so he is like a statue, surging and swift.
He was like a firmly rooted firmly planted statue.

Traveling light, without our provisions,
Trusting in their speed without supplies,
trusting the colt, not driven by want.
Relying on their excellence without lack.

Then there was the wild-ass herd in the fierce forenoon heat,
But when the forenoon was in its hottest
with a white-rumped male, his flesh in distinct masses,
A small-headed Kahrab with prominent flesh.

stout-backed, four-toothed, keeping apart,
His flanks sturdy, a ready runner
frisky, his last tooth already showing:
From which the hindmost of them could not escape.

no weak youngster, prone to stumbling,
No small weak foal with falling stride
nor an old one nearing decrepitude.
Nor old heavy slow-paced pack-horse.

He saw us and came toward us, hoarse-voiced,
He saw us and came to us directly
spirited, driving the females over the hilltops,
Showing his incisors to the utmost.

sinking his two fangs into their flanks;
He clashed his tusks against their shoulders
whenever he lets go, he loses them in the retreat.
Whenever he turned back breathless.

And when he rushes headlong, [text unclear],
And when he attacked the head of one of them
a Zāʿibī spearhead in a solid Rudaynī shaft.
A Za'ibite against a Rudainite blind of eye.

We urged our horse against him, there among the herd,
And we ordered him at him from among them
after he had wheeled away, pressing on or recoiling.
After he had complied, bending his neck or silent.

Then he was like a bucket in a water-drawer's hand,
He was like the bucket in the drawer of the waterer.
whose crossbars gave way, so it broke loose.
The bowls slipped from it and were smashed to pieces.
