This night has grown long upon us and thickened into darkness.

As though I had vowed to stay awake until dawn,

Because of grief, my whispering companion dwelling with me,

Between what I reveal of it and what I conceal.

As though the night contained another like itself,

Though long ago the night was thought brief.

I never closed my eyes throughout it, until it passed,

Wishing I could see the dawn break bright.

My side is restless, as though, lying down,

A smith had planted needles along my flank.

Not from love, but from a visitor in the night

That stole sleep and bestowed wakefulness upon me.

When news reached me from a benefactor

Whom I never betrayed—by the one who gave the news.

    ولقد يُلفَى معَ الصَّفوِ الكَدَر

    It was spoken of, until its confirmation reached me;

And indeed, the turbid is found beside the clear.

Do you see any women in litters, departing early,

Appearing from the uplands in companies,

Like willows by the sea, rising above deep water,

As its current grows still and stretches out?

And you see likenesses of every sort of thing:

Every living form, and patterned curtains drawn close.

On the camel-litters are the colors of spear-shafts,

And meadow lavender, with blossoms rising above it.

Year after year it has poured down its rain [reading uncertain],

So the meadow's gazelles are fed with fruit.

Convey to al-Nu'man a message from me,

The words of one who feared suspicion and made his defense:

    Truly, by God—accept my oath—

I am indeed a monk, who cries aloud whenever he prays,

His inward parts trembling in a sanctuary,

Fine of locks, abundant of hair,

Faithful at heart, hoping for his deliverance

On the day no servant is denied what he has laid up.

We have borne none of your enemies' rancor,

And with God lies the defense kept secret.

Enemies surround us; nothing aids us

But God's help—and God has granted victory.

Do not be like one who heals his own bone

With treatment, until the bone has knit,

Then returns after its knitting, seeking a weakness,

Insisting on walking on it—so it breaks.

And remember the favor which I have not forgotten,

In striving for you, when the servant was ungrateful,

When we scattered them far and wide, as

One kindling fire scatters sparks in the night.

So keep yourself sheltered; do not be a flighty slave,

And beware the champions among us, and the bulls.

Our striving has already brought forward only

Favors that raise up whoever among us stumbles.

Ours are glory and a bountiful lord,

In whose hands is goodness; he commands what he wills.

    إنَّما يُرجَى لِمَا فاتَ الغِيرَ

    From him comes bounty, and with him is abundance;

He alone is sought for what eludes others.

And an effective intercessor attends to us,

In whose hands today lies the easing of hardship.

Our arms did not fail us in hardship,

And the contender among us rose high and prevailed,

When we hemmed them into a narrow strait,

Then won from them the prize of striving and victory.
