He has poured water into their hollows,

and they flew apart in scattered fragments.

Nothing endures in the face of death,

save the face of the glorified Creator.

If we are safe, evil takes us unawares,

    striking the loving and compassionate.

For my breast is innocent of wrong against the Lord,

and of violating the covenant's solemn bond.

And indeed, a kinsman's visit has grieved me—

a beloved man, yearning for our affection.

Our plight grieved him, plain in our hands

and their being drawn up to our necks.

    لا يُؤَاتي العِنَاقُ مَن في الوِثَاقِ

    So go, Umaym, but not far away;

no embrace is possible for one in bonds.

And go, Umaym; if God wills,

He will ease the tightening of this noose.

Or if it be a departure, that is the way

of humankind; those who chant charms cannot avert death.

And the enemies say, “ʿAdi has perished,”

and his sons are certain of his doom.

    O Abu Mus'hir, convey a message

to my brothers, if you reach the heart of Iraq.

You two, tell ʿAmir, and tell his brother

that I am fettered, my bonds tight.

In the iron of the balance, the guard watches me,

    and a man encounters everything.

    In doubled iron and shackles,

    and spattered, threadbare garments.

So ride out in the sacred month; free your brother:

a caravan has indeed been readied for departure.
