    O Lubayna, kindle the fire,

for the one you love has lost his way.

Many a fire I watched through the night,

as it gnawed Indian aloeswood and laurel.

Beside it, a gazelle stoked the flames,

    with a girdle knotted about his waist;

a fawn with eyes of vivid black and white,

and you would take his face for a dinar.

Convey a message to the young men,

sincere counsel from me, and tidings:

Indeed, I sought out great ventures as a youth,

and found life full of changing phases.

No one can make his life so prosperous

that he meets no hardship in it,

from a friend or a trusted brother,

or an enemy whose home is far away,

or misfortunes that keep besetting him,

so that the familiar turns strange.
