    Where are the dwellers in the homes of Noah's people,

    Then ʿAd after them, and Thamud?

    Where are our fathers, and where are their sons?

    Where are their fathers, and where are the forefathers?

    وأَرانا قَد كانَ مِنَّا وُرُودُ

    They were led along the path of death and perished;

    And I see that some of us have already arrived there.

    And still the tale has not ended; rather,

    After this come the promise in full, and the threat.

    ضَلَّ عَنهُم سَعُوطُهُم واللَّدودُ

    And the physicians followed them in turn;

    Their nasal and oral remedies availed them nothing.

    And many a healthy man has come to visit a sick man,

    Though he is nearer death than the one he visits.
