إذا ما غَدا يَخَالُهُ الغِرُّ صادِعا
Then at dawn a sturdy, white-marked wild ass met us;
In the morning we came across a thin and gaunt colt
When he set out, the inexperienced would take him for a young ibex.
Who imagines the nearby hill is challenging him at dawn

فأَيأَسَ إذ أَدبَرنَ مَن كانَ طامِعا
He circles six, bow-like, approaching water;
He prances about quickly like boats made of wood
So, as they turned away, he left the hopeful in despair.
So he despaired when the hopeful ones retreated

With close-set joints and legs held bowed,
With hunched bones he walks all hunched over
He shakes a supple branch with trailing tresses.
Shaking a branch with dangling wet ends

فَأَذرِع بِه لِخَلَّةِ الشَّاةِ راقِعا
Our young man lunged at him with his spear;
Our boy turned him towards the canal
How swiftly he patched our lack of a sheep!
So he sped to the pasture striking the ground while running
