Listen to a tale that you may one day recount,

from memory, if a questioner should ask:

how the God of creation revealed His favor

among us, and made His earliest signs known to us.

There were winds and water in abundance,

and darkness leaving neither rift nor gap.

Then He commanded the black darkness, and it lifted,

and removed the water from what it had occupied.

And He spread the earth wide, then measured it out,

level beneath the sky, just as He had done.

And He made the sun an unmistakable boundary

between day and night, which He had set apart.

He completed His creation in six days,

and His last act was to fashion man.

He called him 'Adam' aloud, and he answered Him,

through a breath of spirit in the body that was molded.

Then He gave him Paradise as an inheritance, to inhabit,

and fashioned his wife from his rib.

His Lord forbade him none but a single tree,

among the goodly trees, whether to smell or eat.

The speckled serpent, when it was created, was

like a she-camel or he-camel in form, as you see them.

Then the two made for the tree they were forbidden to eat,

at Eve's urging; she meant him no deceit.

Both sewed, when they were stripped of their clothing,

from fig leaves a garment that had never been spun.

Then God cursed the serpent for misleading His vicegerent,

for as long as nights endure, with no end set to the curse.

It crawls upon its belly for as long as it lives,

and eats the dust, whether rough or smooth.

So our two parents knew toil in their lives,

and brought about hunger, suffering, and disease.

    نَشفي بِحِكمتَهِ أَحلامَنا عِلَلا

    And the two were given dominion and the Gospel, which we read;

through its wisdom we heal our minds of ailments.

Not out of any need, but only to make us

lords above creation, as He has done.
