And often I ride out at dawn on a steed adorned

    by a blood-drained man's face and a cheek like a whetstone,

with a neck that makes his handler raise his hand,

docile in the hand, powerfully built, thick-maned.

Compact as an arrow shaft, with no flaw in him

to be seen, nor any split at the knots.

The shaft-shaper dressed it; its bends were straightened

by the press of his palms and the smoothing of the rasp.

    ومتى يخل مِن القودِ يصن

    To whatever breach is feared, he is summoned;

and whenever freed from being led, he prances.

Like a house-reared darling, his rug is split

by eager feeding on fodder and milk given before dawn.

So we perfected his conditioning until he wintered,

at ease, relentless in his course.

Then, when a wild ass wheeled about,

and ostriches fled after coming into view,

a spirited one outstripped us, making us scorn

the land's thickets and shields thrust forward.

He knits his gallop together in an unchecked torrent,

like rain swelling in an aged cloud.

A keen, fleet courser set the wild calves running,

and a fierce one, never subdued, overtook the herd.

So whoever keeps him praises him:

spirited as a wolf, with his rein stretched long.

    يَهتَدي السَّائِلُ عَنَّا بِالدَّخَن

    And behold, we have four beside us;

whoever asks after us finds his way by the smoke.
