I lay sleepless over a lowering cloud; within it all night

    lightning-flashes climbed hoary summits.

Mashrafi swords gleamed upon its heights,

and it unveiled the surface of a fresh white cloth.

As though mourning women had spent the night upon it,

having dyed their mourning-cloths with streaming blood.

They waved their palms over ʿAdi,

and swept them back toward their bosoms.

It watered the bed of al-ʿAqiq as far as Ufaq,

then Fathur, as far as the dune's breast.

A downpour drenched the summit of al-Adhal,

then Falj, then al-Nabiyy, then Dhu Karib.

From it came dense, steady, pouring rain,

and a bountiful fall branching into streams.

As though dark camels came surging over it,

shunning a reed-piper, then moaning like aged she-camels.

It brought what the Pleiades had supplied it,

yielding its course to the south wind's streaming rain.

The enemies schemed, sparing no evil

against me—by the Lord of Mecca and the Cross.

They wanted a great man left to languish,

then imprisoned or hurled into a well.

I faced your adversary and did not flinch,

when they had drawn you into a grievous day.

I dealt with them openly and kept every secret hidden,

like what lies between bark and palm-stalk.

So you prevailed over them when we met,

with your crown—a triumph like a winning lot-arrow's.

My concern is not that favor was soured for me,

but the strangeness of what I have suffered.

This is not the first thing I have suffered

from time's vicissitudes and misfortune close at hand.

Nor do I seek to inquire after a report

that swift riders have carried to the tribes.

What concern have I with it, with the guards around me,

while my own grief, if I dwelt on it, would overwhelm me?

Terrors aside, sorrow surely comes at dawn

upon one burdened with cares and deeply stirred by grief.

God's bounty answers it for me,

and my patience when calamities descend.

Is there no one to tell al-Nuʿman on my behalf?

Sincere counsel may be offered from afar.

Was my portion a chain and a fetter,

and a neck-shackle? The explanation lies with the physician.

They are with you now, just as they wished,

and rich gifts are hoped for from one who rewards.

Word reached you that my imprisonment had grown long,

yet you did not inquire after a despoiled prisoner.

I have no helper but women,

widows who have wasted away from wailing.

They let tears stream down for ʿAdi,

like an old waterskin betrayed by a fosterling's stitching.

They fear the slanderers on ʿAdi's behalf,

and the sins they have laid to his charge.

So if I erred or overlooked some matter,

even a devoted friend may err toward one he loves.

    وإن أُظلَم فذلكَ من نصيبي

    And if I have done wrong, you have already punished me;

and if I am wronged, that is part of my lot.

And if I perish, you will feel my loss and be left without aid

when spearheads meet in times of peril.

Will you then remedy our plight,

and not be turned away from sound, unerring judgment?

And today I have entrusted my affair

to a Lord who is near and answers prayer.
