تُوهَبُ فينا الِقيانُ والحلَلُ
No reprovers intrude upon our drinking, while
Our drinking is not tainted by cowardice, though
Singing girls and robes are given away among us.
Nausea and sickness may be granted us.

لا عاجِزٌ فِيهم ولا وَكَلُ
And I keep company with young men like swords:
I summon young men like swords, among them
No weakling among them, nor anyone reliant on others;
No weakling, none assigned a lesser role.

Fair-faced, lavish with food in winter; and even if
White-skinned, though the winter rain
A rain-star fails in its downpour, they rain down bounty.
Breaks over them, and they are drenched, they bear it;
لاnot يَتَأَرَّونَthey hang back فيin المضيقِthe tight spot وإنand if

نادَى الُمنادي أَن أَنزِلوا نَزَلُوا
They do not hang back in a tight spot; and if
They do not flinch from the steep path though
The herald calls, 'Dismount!' they dismount.
The caller urges them to descend and camp.

When the horsemen charge, it is inevitable that
In the melee of horsemen there must
A champion is left for them on the battlefield,
Be left to them on the battlefield a hero.

His cheek smeared with dust, a penetrating wound in him,
The down on his cheek is still sparse -
Gushing with blood that no lint wicks can staunch.
A seething mass, whom missiles cannot check.
