I drank with the sons of ʿAlqama in the monastery.
I reproached myself in the monastery of Bani Alqama
I passed them wine cooled by the north wind, red as ʿandam dye.
When I gave them intoxicating drinks
كأَنَّas though رِبحَprofit (likely intended: scent) المِسكِmusk فيin كأسِهاits cup
إذاwhen مَزَجناهاwe mixed it بِماءِwith the water of السَّماthe sky
As though the scent of musk were in its cup,
As if the profit of musk in its cup
When we mixed it with water from the sky.
When we mix it with the water of the sky
عَلقَمُO ʿAlqam ماwhat بالُكَis the matter with you لَمnot (past negation) تَأتِناyou come to us
أَمَاhave you not? اشتَهَيتَyou wished اليَومَtoday أَنَّto تَنعَماenjoy yourself
ʿAlqam, why have you not come to us?
Alqama, what is wrong with you, why did you not come to us
Have you not wished today to enjoy yourself?
Do you not desire today to indulge?
مَنwhoever سَرَّهُpleases him العَيشُlife وَلذَّاتُهُand its pleasures
فَليَجعَلِthen let him make الرَّاحَwine لَهُfor himself سُلَّماa ladder
Whoever delights in life and its pleasures,
He who desires life and its pleasures
Then let him make wine his ladder.
Let him make rest his ladder
