دَعَاcalled صُرَدٌa shrike يَوماًone day عَلَىupon عُودِa bough of شَوحَطٍa shawḥaṭ tree
دَعَا صُرَدٌ يَوماً عَلَى عُودِ شَوحَطٍ
وصاحَand cried out بِذاتِconcerning the state of البَينِseparation مِنهاfrom her غُرابُهاher raven
وصاحَ بِذاتِ البَينِ مِنها غُرابُها
A shrike called one day upon a shawḥaṭ bough;
A sparrow called out one day on shoots of artemisia
And her raven cried out, heralding parting from her.
And shouted to her who was separated from him, to his raven
فَقُلتُso I said أَتَصريدٌis it deprivation? وشَحطٌand distance وغُربَةٌand exile
فَقُلتُ أَتَصريدٌ وشَحطٌ وغُربَةٌ
فَهَذاso this لَعَمريby my life نَأيُهاher remoteness واغترِابهاand her exile
فَهَذا لَعَمري نَأيُها واغترِابها
So I said, “Is this deprivation, distance, and exile?”
So I said, a sparrow and artemisia and separation -
So this, by my life, is her remoteness and exile.
By my life, this is indeed her remoteness and estrangement
