تَعرِفُ أَمسِ مِن لَمِيس الطَّلَل
مِثلَlike الكتَابِthe writing الدَّارسِeffaced الأَحوالthe years
مِثلَ الكتَابِ الدَّارسِ الأَحوال
Yesterday you recognized Lamis's ruined campsite,
You can distinguish yesterday from the ruins,
like writing effaced by the years.
Like a student examining circumstances.
أَنعمmay you fare well صَبَاحاًin the morning عَلقَمَAlqam بنَson of عَديّAdi
أَنعم صَبَاحاً عَلقَمَ بنَ عَديّ
أَثَوَيتَare you staying? الَيومَtoday أَمor تَرحَلwill you depart?
أَثَوَيتَ الَيومَ أَم تَرحَل
A fair morning to you, Alqam son of Adi!
Did you lodge this morning at Alqama ibn Adyy,
Are you staying today, or will you depart?
Or are you moving on today?
قَدalready رَحَّلَsaddled الفِتيَانُthe young men عِيرَهُمُtheir pack animals
قَد رَحَّلَ الفِتيَانُ عِيرَهُمُ
واللَّحمُand the meat بِالغيطَانِin the hollows لَمnot yet يُنشَلbe lifted out
واللَّحمُ بِالغيطَانِ لَم يُنشَل
The young men have already saddled their pack animals,
The young men have loaded up their camels
while the meat in the hollows has not yet been lifted out.
And the meat at Al-Ghiṭān was not cut into strips.
إذwhen هِيَshe تَسبيcaptivates النَّاظرِينَthe onlookers وتَجand she reveals (word begins)
إذ هِيَ تَسبي النَّاظرِينَ وتَج
لُوcompletion of 'reveals' واضِحاًbright white كَالأُقحُوانِlike chamomile رَتِلevenly spaced
لُو واضِحاً كَالأُقحُوانِ رَتِل
When she captivated onlookers and revealed
As it captivates the gazes of onlookers
bright, evenly spaced teeth like chamomile,
And appears clearly like columns in a line.
عَذباًsweet كماjust as ذُفتُI tasted الَجِنَّيthe fresh-picked fruit مِنَof التُفَّthe apples (word begins)
عَذباً كما ذُفتُ الَجِنَّي مِنَ التُفَّ
احِcompletion of 'apples' مَسقيّاًmoistened بِبَردِwith the coolness of الطَّلthe dew
احِ مَسقيّاً بِبَردِ الطَّل
sweet as fresh-picked apples I have tasted,
As sweet as the fragrance I inhaled from the apple,
moistened with cool dew.
Quenched by the coolness of the morning dew.
