أَينَwhere أَهلُthe inhabitants الدِّيارِthe dwellings مِنamong قَومِthe people of نُوحٍNoah
أَينَ أَهلُ الدِّيارِ مِن قَومِ نُوحٍ
ثُمَّthen عادٌʿĀd مِنfrom بَعدِهِمafter them وثَمُودُand Thamūd
ثُمَّ عادٌ مِن بَعدِهِم وثَمُودُ
Where are those of Noah's people who dwelt in the homes,
Then ʿĀd after them, and Thamūd?
أَينَwhere آباؤُناour fathers وأَينَand where بَنُوهُمtheir sons
أَينَ آباؤُنا وأَينَ بَنُوهُم
أَينwhere آباؤُهُمtheir fathers وأَينَand where الجُدُودُthe forefathers
أَين آباؤُهُم وأَينَ الجُدُودُ
Where are our fathers, and where their sons?
Where are their fathers, and where the forefathers?
سُلَكُواthey followed مَنهَجَthe path الَمناياthe deaths فباُدواand they perished
سُلَكُوا مَنهَجَ الَمنايا فباُدوا
وأَراناand I see us قَدalready كانَthere has been مِنَّاfrom among us وُرُودُan arrival at death
وأَرانا قَد كانَ مِنَّا وُرُودُ
They followed the path of death and perished;
And I see that some of us have already arrived there.
ثُمَّthen لَمnot يَنقَضِcome to an end الَحديثُthe tale ولَكِنbut
ثُمَّ لَم يَنقَضِ الَحديثُ ولَكِن
بَعدَafter ذاthis الوَعدُthe promise كلُّهُall of it والوَعيدُand the threat
بَعدَ ذا الوَعدُ كلُّهُ والوَعيدُ
And the tale has not yet ended; rather,
After this come the promise in full and the threat.
والأَطِباءُand the physicians بَعدَهُمafter them لَحِقُوهُمthey joined them
والأَطِباءُ بَعدَهُم لَحِقُوهُم
ضَلَّwent astray عَنهُمaway from them سَعُوطُهُمtheir nasal medicine واللَّدودُand medicine poured into one side of the mouth
ضَلَّ عَنهُم سَعُوطُهُم واللَّدودُ
And after them the physicians joined them;
Their nasal remedies and medicines poured into the mouth failed them.
وصَحيحٍand many a healthy man أَضحَىcame to be يَعُودُhe visits مَريضاًa sick man
وصَحيحٍ أَضحَى يَعُودُ مَريضاً
وهَوَand he أَدنَىnearer لِلمَوتِto death مِمَّنthan the one whom يَعُودُhe visits
وهَوَ أَدنَى لِلمَوتِ مِمَّن يَعُودُ
And many a healthy man comes to visit a sick man,
While he is nearer death than the one he visits.
