ولَقَدand indeed أَغدُوI go out at dawn بِطِرفٍon a fine steed زانَهُadorned him
وَجهُthe face of مَنزُوفٍone drained of blood وخَدٍّand a cheek كَالِمسَنlike a whetstone
And indeed, I ride out at dawn on a steed adorned by
The face of one drained of blood and a cheek like a whetstone.
ذيwith تَليلٍa neck مُشنِقٍdrawing upward قائِدَهُhis handler
يَسَرٍeasy to handle فيin الكَفِّthe hand نَهدٍstrongly built ذيwith غُسَنlocks of hair
With a neck that makes his handler reach high,
Easy in hand, strongly built, with flowing locks.
مُدمجٍcompactly formed كالقِدحِlike an arrow-shaft لاَno عَيبَflaw بهِin him
فيُرَىso it might be seen فيهِin him ولاnor صَدعَsplitting أُبَنwood-knots
Compact as an arrow-shaft, with no flaw in him
That could be seen in him, nor any splitting at the knots.
رَمَّهُset him right الباريthe shaft-maker فَسَوَّىthen straightened دَرأَهُhis crookedness
غَمزُthe pressure of كَفَّيهِhis two palms وتَخليقُand smoothing with السَّفَنabrasive hide
The shaft-maker set him right; his crookedness was straightened
By the pressure of his two palms and polishing with rough hide.
أيّwhichever ثغرٍvulnerable opening ماwhatsoever يُخفَis feared يَندبhe is summoned لهُfor it
ومتىand whenever يخلhe is free مِنfrom القودِbeing led يصنhe is safeguarded
Whatever breach is feared, he is summoned for it;
And when not led out, he is carefully kept,
كَرَبيبِlike a cherished child البَيتِof the house يَفريsplits جُلَّهُhis horsecloth
طاعَةُready abundance of العُضِّfodder وتَسحيرُand predawn feeding with اللَّبَنmilk
Like the house's cherished child, his horsecloth is split
By plentiful fodder and milk fed before dawn.
فَبلَغناso we completed صَنعَهُhis conditioning حَتَّىuntil شَتاhe wintered
ناعِمَat ease البالِin mind لَجُوجاًtenacious فيin السَّنَنthe straight course
So we saw his conditioning through until he wintered,
At ease in mind, relentless on his course.
فإِذاthen when جالَwheeled about حِمَارٌan ass مُوحِشٌwild
ونَعَامٌand ostriches نافِرٌfleeing بَعدَafter عَنَنcoming into view
Then, when a wild ass wheels about,
And ostriches flee after coming into view,
شَاءَنَاoutstripped us ذُوpossessed of مَيعَةٍsurging vigor يُبطِرُناmakes us scorn
خَمَرَthe cover of الأَرضِthe ground وتَقديمَand putting forward الَجنَنprotective screens
One with surging vigor outstripped us, making us scorn
The ground's cover and putting protective screens before us.
يَرأَبُrestores الشَّدَّthe gallop بِسَحٍّwith a pouring rush مُرسِلٍunrestrained
كاحتِفالِlike the swelling of الغَيثِrain بِالُمزنِin the rain-clouds اليفَنَaged
He renews his gallop with an unrestrained outpouring,
Like rain brimming in aged rain-clouds.
أَنسَلَsent running الذِّرعَانِwild-cow calves غَربٌkeen vigor خَذِمٌswift and cutting
وَعلاَand overtook الرَّبرَبَthe wild herd أَزمٌfierce and tenacious لَمdid not يُدَنbecome subdued
A keen, cutting rush sent the wild calves running;
And, fierce and unconquered, he overtook the herd.
فالّذيso whoever يُمِسكُهُholds him يَحمَدُهُpraises him
تَثِقٌeager (uncertain reading) كالسِّيدِlike a wolf مُمتَدُّstretched out الرَّسَنthe halter-rope
So whoever holds him praises him:
Eager as a wolf, with his halter-rope stretched taut.
وإذاand behold نَحنُwe لَدَيناhave with us أَربَعٌfour
يَهتَديfinds the way السَّائِلُthe inquirer عَنَّاafter us بِالدَّخَنby the smoke
And behold, we have four beside us;
The one asking after us finds his way by the smoke.
