مَنwhoever رَأناsaw us فيُحَدِّثthen let him tell نَفسَهُhimself
أَنَّهُthat he مُوفٍpoised عَلَىupon قَرنِthe crest of زَوالdecline
Whoever sees us, let him tell himself
that he stands upon the crest of decline.
وخُطوبُand the calamities of الدَّهرِtime لاnot يَبقَىendure لَهاagainst them
ولِمَاand against what تَأتيthey come بهِwith it صُمُّsolid الجِبالthe mountains
And time's calamities cannot be withstood,
nor what they bring, even by the solid mountains.
رُبَّmany a رَكبٍband of riders قَدindeed أَنَاخُواthey camped عِندَناbeside us
يَشرَبُونَthey drink الَخمرَwine بِالماءِwith water الزُّلالlimpid
Many a band of riders camped beside us,
drinking wine with limpid water;
والأَباريقُand the pitchers عَلَيهاover them فُدُمٌstraining cloths
وعِتَاقُand the thoroughbreds of الَخيلِthe horses تَرديgallop فيin الجِلالhorsecloths
and the pitchers had straining cloths over them,
and noble horses galloped in their horsecloths.
عَمُرواthey lived دَهراًfor an age بِعَيشٍwith a life حَسَنٍgood
آمِنيsecure from دَهرِهُمُtheir time غَيرَnot عِجالhasty
They lived long, enjoying a good life,
safe from their time's perils, unhurried.
ثُمًّthen أَضحَواthey became أَخنَعَbrought low الَّهرُtime بهمthem
وكَذلكَand thus الدَّهرُtime يُوديbrings ruin بِالجبالupon the mountains
Then they were brought low by time;
and thus time brings ruin upon the mountains.
وكَذاكَand thus الدَّهرُtime يَرميflings بالفَتَىthe young man
فيin طلابِpursuit of العَيشِa living حالاًone state بَعدَafter حالanother state
And thus time flings the young man,
in pursuit of a living, from one state to the next.
