You took the lead, advancing kindness and beneficence;
you bestowed a favor, thereby winning gratitude.

And the first to act holds a rank in generosity
that leaves the follower short, though he do his utmost.

Your maidens came to us, those you had sent
to enrich us in knowledge and clothe us in pride.

They voiced an excuse and hung a debt of gratitude about our necks,
and said, "Whoever speaks poetry, let him speak it thus."

Some are once-wedded, deflowered only by stealth,
and some are virgin words, each wedded to a virgin.

My striving among them ever falls short,
and evening finds my conjectures exhausted, short of their goal.

Whenever I seek to draw near them, they hold aloof,
and in all fairness, they have a right to show pride.

for a noble man, let him dwell in the barren land.
