تبيتُyou spend the night تَحلجُyou card cotton طُولَthroughout الليلthe night مُنكَمشَاًhunched up
تبيتُ تَحلجُ طُولَ الليل مُنكَمشَاً
وبختيارُand Bakhtiyar يُنَاديcalls out أدركواrescue! الغرقاthe drowning
وبختيارُ يُنَادي أدركوا الغرقا
You spend the whole night carding cotton, hunched up,
I pass the night folded, while all night long
And Bakhtiyar calls, “Rescue the drowning!”
Bukhayr is calling: "Take heed of the flood!"
وقامand rose عمروAmr فأمَّتهthen headed toward him أَكُفُّpalms of يدٍa hand
وقام عمرو فأمَّته أَكُفُّ يدٍ
لماwhen انثنىhe turned back أوor تَحسَّىhe sipped منهمُfrom them المرقاthe broth
لما انثنى أو تَحسَّى منهمُ المرقا
And Amr rose; then the palms of a hand headed toward him,
So Amr stood up and urged his tribe: "Stay your hands
When he turned back, or sipped the broth from them.
Whenever among you one turns away or spares."
إذاwhen هوىfell منهfrom him مِثلُsomething like الرُّمحthe spear واتسعتand it widened
إذا هوى منه مِثلُ الرُّمح واتسعت
كالتُّرسِlike a shield وافقَmatched شنُّShann عندهاat that point طبقاa lid
كالتُّرسِ وافقَ شنُّ عندها طبقا
When something like a spear fell from him, and it widened
When from them fell a spear-like cast, and spread
Like a shield—there Shann found a matching lid.
Like a shield, agreeing with the grade's lay there at rest.
