منfrom أينwhere للعارِضِfor the raincloud السَّاريtraveling by night تلهُّبُهits blazing
وكيفَand how طَبَّقcovered وَجهَthe face of الأَرضِthe earth صَيِّبُهits downpour
Whence comes the blaze of the night-traveling raincloud?
And how has its downpour covered the face of the earth?
هلhas ...? استعانَsought help from جُفُونيmy eyelids فهيَso they تُنجِدُهُaid it
أمor استعارَborrowed فُؤاديmy heart فهوso it يُلهبُهُsets it ablaze
Has it sought my eyelids' help, so that they aid it?
Or borrowed my heart, which sets it aflame?
بجانبon the side of الكرخal-Karkh منof بغدادَBaghdad ليI have سَكَنٌa beloved
لولاwere it not for التَجَمُّلُoutward composure ماnot أَنفَكُّI cease أَندبُهُI lament him
On the al-Karkh side of Baghdad, I have a beloved;
But for outward composure, I would never cease lamenting him.
وصاحبٍand a friend ماnot صَحِبتُI kept company with الصَّبرَpatience مذsince بَعُدتgrew distant
ديارُهُhis dwellings وأرِانيand I see myself لستُI am not أَصحبُهُI keep it company
And a friend—I have not kept patience company since distant grew
His dwellings; and I find I keep it company no longer.
فيin كلevery يومٍday لعَينيfor my eye ماthat which يؤرِّقُهاkeeps it sleepless
منfrom ذِكرِهremembering him ولقلَبيand for my heart ماthat which يُعَذِّبُهtorments it
Each day my eye has something to keep it sleepless
From remembering him, and my heart something to torment it.
ماnot زالceased يُبِعدُنيhe drives me away عنهfrom him وأُتبِعُهُand I follow him
ويستمرُّand he persists علىin ظُلميwronging me وأعتبُهُand I reproach him
He kept driving me away from him, while I followed him,
And persisted in wronging me, while I reproached him,
حتىuntil لَوَتturned ليin my favor النوىseparation منbecause of طولِthe length of جَفوِتهِhis coldness
وَسَهَّلتand made easy ليfor me سبيلاًa path كنتI used to أَرهبُهُI fear it
Until, through his long coldness, separation turned in my favor,
And smoothed for me a path I once had dreaded.
وماand not البعادُdistance دَهَانيafflicted me بلbut rather خَلائقُهhis ways
ولاnor الفراقُparting شَجانيgrieved me بلbut rather تجنُّبهُhis avoidance
It was not distance that afflicted me, but his ways;
Nor parting that grieved me, but his avoidance.
لوif أنthat قلبيmy heart علىdespite ماwhat فيهis in it منof جَزَعٍanguish
يَومَon the day of النَّوَىseparation بيديin my hand ماnot ضاقgrew narrow مهرَبُهits escape route
Had my heart, for all the anguish within it,
Been in my hand on parting day, its escape route would not have narrowed.
إذاًthen لَجُدتُI would have been generous بهwith it طوعاًwillingly بينهمamong them
كيso that لاnot أكونI would be برغميagainst my will حينwhen أَسلبهُI am robbed of it
Then I would have willingly bestowed it among them,
So I would not be robbed of it against my will.
ماnot فائتa thing lost بذَلَتهُgave it up النَّفسُthe soul طائعةًwillingly
كماlike what تُمانعit fights عنهin its defense ثمthen تُغلبُهis robbed of it
What is lost through the soul's willing surrender is not
Like what it fights to keep, then loses by force.
