هذا أبو مُضر كفتنا كَفُّه

شكوى اللئضامِ فما نَذُمُّ لئيما
This is Abu Mudar; his hand has spared us
This is Abu Mudhar, his palm has sufficed us,
complaining of the base, so we blame no base man.
The complaint of the vile, we do not regret a villain.
هذاthis الجسيمُmighty مَوَاهباًin gifts هذاthis الشريthe noble (first part)
هذا الجسيمُ مَوَاهباً هذا الشري
ف(completes 'noble') مَنَاصِباًin rank هذاthis المهذَّبrefined خِيماin character
ف مَنَاصِباً هذا المهذَّب خِيما
This is he of mighty gifts; this is he who is noble—
This handsome man, his talents, this noble one,
—in rank; this is he of refined character.
In positions, this refined one a tent.
سمكَتrose high كهمّتهِlike his ambition السماءُthe sky ومُثِّلتand were depicted
سمكَت كهمّتهِ السماءُ ومُثِّلت
فيهاwithin it خلائقُهhis qualities الشرافnoble نُجُوماas stars
فيها خلائقُه الشراف نُجُوما
The sky rose as high as his ambition; and there were pictured
His determination ascended to the sky and was modeled
within it his noble qualities as stars.
In it his noble traits as stars.
نشوانintoxicated قدindeed جعلhe made المحامدَpraiseworthy deeds والعُلاand glory
نشوان قد جعل المحامدَ والعُلا
دونinstead of الُمدَامةwine ساقياًa cupbearer ونَديماand a boon companion
دون الُمدَامة ساقياً ونَديما
Intoxicated, he has made noble deeds and glory
Nashwan has made praise and supremacy
his cupbearer and boon companion in place of wine.
Below drinking companions a cupbearer and boon companion.
أعدَىinfected الأنامَhumankind طباعُهُhis nature فتكَرَّمُواso they became generous
أعدَى الأنامَ طباعُهُ فتكَرَّمُوا
لوif جازit were permissible أنto يُدعَىbe called سواهanyone other than him كريماgenerous
لو جاز أن يُدعَى سواه كريما
His nature infected humankind, so they became generous—
His nature has harmed people, so they were generous,
if anyone but him could be called generous.
If it was proper to call anyone else generous.
لوif لمnot أُشرِّفI ennoble بامتداحكby praising you مَنطقيmy speech
لو لم أُشرِّف بامتداحك مَنطقي
ماnot انقادfollowed obediently نحوكtoward you خاطِريmy thought مزموماled by a rein
ما انقاد نحوك خاطِري مزموما
Had I not ennobled my speech by praising you,
If my speech had not been honored by praising you
my thought would not have been led toward you on a rein.
My thoughts would not have inclined towards you fettered.
لكنbut رأىit saw شَرفَthe nobility of المصاهرthe marriage partner فاغتَدىso it began
لكن رأى شَرفَ المصاهر فاغتَدى
يُهديoffering إليكto you لُبَابهits essence المكتوماhidden
يُهدي إليك لُبَابه المكتوما
But it saw the nobility of its marriage partner, and began
But he saw the honor of in-laws so he presumed
offering you its hidden essence.
To present to you his hidden essence.
فحباكso it favored you منfrom نَسجِthe weaving of العقولminds بغَادَةٍwith a graceful maiden
فحباك من نَسجِ العقول بغَادَةٍ
قَطَعَتshe traversed إليكto you مقاصداًintentions وعُزُوماًand resolves
قَطَعَت إليك مقاصداً وعُزُوماً
So it favored you with a graceful maiden, woven by minds,
So he loved you with well-knit minds openly
who traversed intentions and resolves to reach you.
That headed decisively and with determination towards you.
لماwhen تَبَيَّنَتِshe recognized الكفاءَةَthe match's suitability أقسَمَتshe swore
لما تَبَيَّنَتِ الكفاءَةَ أقسَمَت
ألاnot to تغربwander away بَعدَهاafter it وتقيماand remain
ألا تغرب بَعدَها وتقيما
When she recognized the match as fitting, she swore
When compatibility became clear she swore
not to wander thereafter, but to remain.
That she would not disappear afterwards and stay.
لاdo not تبغهاseek for her مَهراًa dower فقدfor already أمهَرتَهاyou have dowered her
لا تبغها مَهراً فقد أمهَرتَها
نُعمَاكyour bounty عنديto me حادثاًrecent وقديماand longstanding
نُعمَاك عندي حادثاً وقديما
Seek no dower for her; you have already dowered her
Do not seek from her a dowry, for you have dowered her
with your favors to me, both recent and of old.
With your bounty in my view recently and long ago.
ألزمتُI have bound شكركthanking you منطقيmy speech وأنامليand my fingertips
ألزمتُ شكرك منطقي وأناملي
وأقمتُand I appointed فكريmy thought بالوفاءِfor faithfulness زَعِيماa guarantor
وأقمتُ فكري بالوفاءِ زَعِيما
I have bound my speech and fingertips to thanking you,
I have devoted my speech and my fingers to thanking you
and made my thought a guarantor of faithfulness.
And I have appointed my thoughts as loyalty's chieftain.
