The rain awoke after sleep and poured forth.

And kept the earth awake until she wearied of sleeplessness.

By morning the blossoms were scattered and gleaming.

And the garden was given morning and evening draughts.

And the pools surged, till a weary region

Of heaven drew near the earth, and the two embraced.

And the hillocks almost turned to moist soil because of it.

And in that rain the earth's surface clothed itself in leaves.

And it clung to the horizon until most of us

Would forget the stars—or the sky would bring forth no dawn.

It satisfied us and gave so lavishly that the most eager among us said:

“We fault it for no trait but its extravagance.”

The earth's face kept urging on its copious flow,

Until I thought the hills were gorged, choking on water.
