Radiant and awe-inspiring is he; his exploits distract us,

In largesse and combat, from Siffin and the Camel.

Nursed by glory's two hands, taking as his bed

The lap of noble virtues, weaned from stinginess.

Sharper than the sword in speech, with no stammer

Overtaking him if a needy man resorts to excuses.

And to one who asked me about your bounty, I said:

A full account of it is impossible; so be content with the outline.

These are the last drops my hands have left, and indeed

I have learned their craft—so look, and do not ask.

All time, when its governance passes

To you, is the season when the sun enters Aries.
