His bounty will not let me rise ungrateful

For his favors, or let him rise without giving.

Nothing enslaves the noble free man like a favor

That brings him benefit unasked, without a word.

I shall praise him, though my words may fall short,

For the tongue of circumstance is not inarticulate.

And if gratitude could amplify a grateful man's voice,

I would make those between al-Hatim and Zamzam hear me.

When I am told, 'Here is a gain within your reach,'

I refuse and say, 'Dignity is the greatest gain.'
