Through you, time's shade grows dewy and sweet,

And it desists from what grieved us, and repents.

And we praise time's works, though many a time

We passed our days while time's hours were sins.

Must noble virtues suffer a fright each day,

At which the hearts of noble deeds pound?

    فمن أين فيه للسَّقام نصيبُ

    Lofty glory has claimed every part of your body;

So where in it could sickness find a share?

When the minister's soul suffers, its pain is shared

By souls that live through it, and by hearts.

And by God, may I never gaze upon a face I love

Throughout my life, while the minister's face is pale.

And what I see upon his face is not pallor,

But rather scars upon noble deeds.

    فَعَمَّا قليل تَبتَدِي فَتَصُوبُ

    So do not despair: that sky has grown cloudy;

For soon it will begin to pour down rain.

And the sun may emerge after being hidden,

And the full moon's light wanes, then returns.

Glory's face beamed, and generosity smiled,

And the branch of bounty greeted morning, fresh and moist.

So may the world remain radiant under your rule,

And may the sweetness of your shade remain within it.

And O sun, run your course over none but one devoted

To obeying him, calling for it and answering its call.

And O time, do not suddenly bring one you do not love

Into an hour of serenity and sweetness for him.

For my prayer is answered, because it is

My heart's pure essence—and hearts are of many kinds.
