I say to a cloud, traveling in a north wind yet asleep,

within which lightning opens a sleepless one's eyelids—

it gathered from scattered parts, yet together came

its sides, until it became a single body:

Before you lies the land of Syria; water the dwelling places

of our loved ones—rather, their memory is in those haunts.

A land where my heart dwells; if I go elsewhere,

it is only a seeker's brief stop and a newcomer's visit.

Remembering it, I disparage my homeland and my birthplace,

and where maidservants' hands passed me from one to another,

and where, whenever I cast my glance, it was charmed by

my age-mates' playgrounds and my father's birthplace.

But in Syria I have a maiden passion,

for whose sake I have deemed reason's plea misguided.
