I departed from Baghdad, the most delightful abode,

and the fairest of God's lands to see and behold.

And I parted from people—whenever I recall them,

tears well up in my eyes, then stream down.

So many a man of letters, brilliant in his ideas,

and a radiant scholar, resplendent in knowledge of sacred law!

I go at evening and morning amid the torment of cares,

struggling with sorrows for which the earth is too narrow.

And I did not weep for al-ʿĀmiriyya's spring abode at al-Liwā,

nor for a dwelling's desolate traces at al-Thaniyya.

But I weep over my stay in a town

where I hope to meet a friend, yet see none.
