وقالوا اضطرب في الأرض فالرزقُ واسعٌ

وقالوا اضطرب في الأرض فالرزقُ واسعٌ

فقلتُ ولكن مَطلبُ الرزقِ ضيِّقُ

فقلتُ ولكن مَطلبُ الرزقِ ضيِّقُ

And they said, “Roam the earth, for sustenance is abundant.”

So I said, “Yet the way to sustenance is narrow:

إذا لم يكُن في الأرض حُرٌّ يُعينُني

إذا لم يكُن في الأرض حُرٌّ يُعينُني

ولم يكُ لي كَسبٌ فمن أين أُرزقُ

ولم يكُ لي كَسبٌ فمن أين أُرزقُ

If there is no noble man on earth to help me,

and I have no earnings, then from where am I to be sustained?”
