    أَوليتَ إنعاماً مَلكتَ به الشكرا

    You took the lead, advancing kindness and beneficence;

you bestowed a favor, thereby winning gratitude.

And the first to act holds a rank in generosity

that leaves the follower short, though he do his utmost.

Your maidens came to us, those you had sent

to enrich us in knowledge and clothe us in pride.

They voiced an excuse and hung a debt of gratitude about our necks,

and said, "Whoever speaks poetry, let him speak it thus."

So you accorded them a gracious reception, honoring

the claim of a youth who brought us renown through them.

Intellect reached its height in them, and their composition was fashioned

by thoughts to which poetic invention yields perforce.

    وإن نُشِرَت فَاحَت مجالسُنَا عطرا

    When beheld, they add radiance to our eyes;

and when unfolded, our gatherings breathe perfume.

My heart and eye long contended for them,

so I gave each half of their beauty.

So I let my gaze roam through the brocade of their gardens,

and set my mind to glean pearls among their words.

Their meanings smile upon us, and whenever

I ponder one of their words, I fancy it a poem.

Some are once-wedded, deflowered only by stealth,

and some are virgin words, each wedded to a virgin.

My striving among them ever falls short,

and evening finds my conjectures exhausted, short of their goal.

Whenever I seek to draw near them, they hold aloof,

and in all fairness, they have a right to show pride.

For they have issued from the mine of merit and eminence,

and kept company with those qualities and that lineage.

So may your blessings be complete and your wishes favor you,

and may you enjoy long life in ease, Abu Umar.

An intention spares both us and you the need for excuses:

when sincere, it takes no account of closeness or estrangement.

I praised you, recounting the noble qualities you possess,

and you clothed me in your radiant, resplendent qualities.

And I am only a branch drawing sustenance

from the source of your outpouring, which has engulfed the sea.

And the words that had been conveyed to me

made me resent, for merit's sake, its growing used to a lesser lot.

If the inhabited land, for all its breadth, grows cramped

for a noble man, let him dwell in the barren land.

And many a noble man, refusing humiliation, has risen

to battle white swords and brown spears for his ambitions.

And he whose ambitions cling to attaining his wishes

undertakes the rugged quest in their tracks.

So do not complain of time's misfortunes, for I

see it intent upon whoever complains of its misfortunes.

And have they ever aided a worthy man before you complained,

that you should hope for help and victory from them?

And none conquers the days like a seasoned man,

who, when a goal defeats him, makes patience prevail.
