Separation is more restful than union fraught with fear.

And death is sweeter than a life of uncertainty.

How can I find solace, when I have no outlet for grief

Except tears and the obsessive whispering of thought?

When I see a lover who has attained his desire,

And his nights have kept him safe from fortune's reversals,

The embers of longing blaze within my liver,

And I nearly perish from my anguish and regrets.

Alas for my soul—how long its misery has lasted!

If it were in my hands, I would shorten my life.

For God's sake, my eye, be generous; and if you run short

Of tears, then melt yourself and stream down.

I have tested my close friends; they were not found true

In keeping faith, nor did they prove sound on trial.

    Discouraging the seeker from greatness,

Content merely to watch the days' shifting fortunes.

    وإن هَفَوتُ فَذَنبي غيرُ مُغتَفر

    If they err, my reproach goes unheard;

And if I slip, my fault goes unforgiven.

I found their most treacherous was the one I trusted most,

And their best the worst in a perilous crisis.

When I show him warmth, he says, 'A schemer!

His means are straitened, so he has come hoping for my rain.'

And if I withdraw from him, he says, 'An arrogant fellow!

He has grown rich; prosperity's conceit has overtaken him.'

And if he becomes a leader, he treats me with aloofness,

And begrudges me a greeting or a glance.

And I become as burdensome as Mount Uhud to him; he regards

My face as the Rafidites regard Umar.

So do not trust a brother merely because his company pleases you,

And be on your guard against your closest companion.

The friend whose company you value is none other

Than one who shares your poverty and prosperity,

And one who shields you when a calamity befalls you,

As a man guards his own eye against blindness.

    وإن غَضِبتَ فكالصَّمصامة الذكرِ

    If you are pleased, he is a slave in his manners;

And if you are angry, he is like the tempered Samsamah blade.
