O breeze of the south, by God, convey

what the love-enslaved, love-distraught one says.

Tell his loved ones: may a heart be your ransom,

one that cannot forget, and an eye that never sleeps.

You departed; sleeplessness dwells with me.

Since you went far away, life to me is death.

    So to al-Karkh, then al-Qati‘a, then al-Sh—

—att, then Bab al-Sha‘ir, go my greetings.

O dwellings of joy, may a cloud never cease weeping

upon you, amid the gardens’ smiling bloom.

How often the life I lived in you was fresh,

while the eyelids of misfortune slept, heedless of me.

In nights that seemed a pledge of safety

from a time that seemed like dreams.

And the hours within them seemed like cups

passed around, and their delight was wine.

A kindly time, a beloved who kept close,

    and wishes the imagination savors.

    All fellowship, pleasure, and joy

have been forbidden to me since you departed.

And many a company among peo—

—ple has a brother above them, noble though they are.
