لولاwere it not for رجائيmy hope ثانياًagain للقائهof meeting him
ماnot كنتُI would أَحياlive ساعةًan hour فيin نأيهِhis absence
Were it not for my hope of meeting him again,
Had I no hope of meeting him again
I would not live an hour in his absence.
I would not live a moment parted from him
سَكَنٌa beloved لهfor whom أبداًforever فؤاديmy heart مسكنٌa dwelling
ماnot مَلَّgrew wearisome يوماًever فيهin it طولُthe length of ثوائِهhis stay
A beloved whose dwelling is forever my heart—
My heart is his eternal dwelling place
His long stay there has never grown wearisome.
Never once wearying of his abode
غُصنٌa bough إذاwhen ماemphatic particle مادَhe sways فيin ميدانهhis arena
أسدٌa lion إذاwhen ماemphatic particle هاجَhe rages فيin هيجائهِhis battle
A bough when he sways in his arena,
A branch, when outstretched in its field
A lion when he rages in his battle.
A lion, when roused in its fury
فيin جفنthe eyelid of ناظرِهhis eye وجَفنand the sheath of حُسامِهhis blade
سيفانtwo swords مختلفانdiffering فيin أنحائهِhis various parts
In the lid of his eye and the sheath of his blade
In the gaze of his eyes and his sword's edge
Lie two swords in different places about him.
Two different swords in their strokes
فبواحدٍso with one يسطوhe assails علىagainst أحبابهِhis loved ones
وبواحدٍand with one يسطوhe assails علىagainst أعدائِهhis enemies
So with one he assails his loved ones,
With one he overcomes his loved ones
And with one he assails his enemies.
With the other he overwhelms his foes
قَمَرٌa moon غداhe became رُوحيmy soul وراحَand he departed مُفارقيparting from me
والجسمُand the body بالروحthrough the soul امتساكُthe sustaining of بقائِهits continued existence
A moon who became my soul, then departed from me,
The moon left and departed from my soul
And the body's life is sustained by the soul.
While my body clings to it for its being
فَتعَجُّبيso my wonder أنthat عِشتُI lived بعدafter فِراقِهparting from him
وتَحَسُّريand my sorrow إنif مُتُّI die قبلbefore لقائِهmeeting him
So I marvel that I lived on after parting from him,
My wonder is that I live after parting
And grieve, should I die before meeting him.
My sorrow that I may die before the meeting
لوif لمnot أَرِدI wanted بَصَريmy sight لرؤيةto see وَجههِhis face
ماnot كنتُI would be ذاpossessed of حِرصٍeagerness علىfor استبقائهِpreserving it
If I did not want my sight to see his face,
If I did not hope to look upon his face
I would not be eager to preserve it.
I would not be so keen to maintain our bond
