سقىmay water جَانبيboth banks of بغدادَBaghdad أخلافُudders of مُزنَةٍa raincloud
تُحاكيmatch دُموعيmy tears صَوبَهاits downpour وانحِدارهاand its descent
May a raincloud’s udders water both banks of Baghdad,
The descendants of Muzainah have watered the outskirts of Baghdad
my tears matching its downpour and descent.
My tears flow towards it and cascade down
فليfor I have فيهماin them both قَلبٌa heart شجانيhas grieved me اشتياقُهُlonging for it
ومهجةُand the lifeblood of نفسٍa soul ماnot أَمَلُّI tire of ادَّكارَهَاremembering her
For in them I have a heart, longing for which has grieved me,
For I have a heart longing for it
and a soul’s lifeblood I never tire of remembering.
And a soul I do not cease remembering
سأغفرُI shall forgive للأيامِthe days كلَّevery عظيمةٍgrievous wrong
لئنif indeed قَرَّبتthey bring near بعدafter الِبعادseparation مَزَارَهاa visit to her
I shall forgive the days every grievous wrong,
I will forgive time for all its enormities
if, after separation, they bring a visit to her within reach.
If after separation it brings me to visit it
