Whoever serves the Lord with sincere devotion

Gains honor and need not suffer the abasement of slaves.

And one who serves a created being is either in

    Humiliation or in severe torment.

He pins his hopes on—and fears—a mortal like himself.

That is misguidance that cannot be surpassed.

O night traveler through the darkness of desire,

And you who serve a created being, what do you seek?

You seek ease from the hands of one in hardship.

Come to your senses, for this pursuit brings no benefit.

God has brought the fruit within your reach,

Yet you call out from a distant place.
