ماwhatever خمرclouds العقلthe mind فهوthen it is خمرwine
ما خمر العقل فهو خمر
والخمرand wine عندin the view of اللبيبthe discerning person جمرburning coals
والخمر عند اللبيب جمر
Whatever clouds the mind is wine.
Wine that intoxicates the mind is wine,
And wine, to the discerning, is burning coals.
And wine to the wise is embers.
جماعthe sum of إثمsin غَولٌa bane لوفدٍto a company of visitors
جماع إثم غَولٌ لوفدٍ
بأسhardship وبؤسand misery ضرharm وضرّand hurt
بأس وبؤس ضر وضرّ
The sum of sin, a bane to a company of visitors:
A gathering of sin, aggression of guests
Hardship and misery, harm and hurt.
Misery and misery, harm and harm.
ياO شاربdrinker of الخمرwine مستسراًin secret
يا شارب الخمر مستسراً
ماno دونbeyond ربِّthe Lord of العبادthe servants سرّa secret
ما دون ربِّ العباد سرّ
O drinker of wine in secret,
O you who drinks wine in secret,
No secret is hidden from the Lord of humankind.
Nothing is secret from the Lord of servants.
لاdo not تسدلdraw a veil over السرّthe secret ماthere is no علىover منwhoever
لا تسدل السرّ ما على من
يعصيdisobeys إلهthe God of السَّماءheaven سترa covering
يعصي إله السَّماء ستر
Do not cloak the secret; no one
Do not conceal what sins against
Who disobeys the God of heaven has a covering.
The God of the heavens provide cover.
واذكرand remember إذاwhen ماemphatic particle الحياةlife ولَّتhas departed
واذكر إذا ما الحياة ولَّت
وحانand came due موتdeath وتمَّand ended عمرa lifetime
وحان موت وتمَّ عمر
And remember: when life departs,
Remember when life passes
And death is due, and a lifetime ends,
And death comes and age is full
وجاءand came موتdeath وجاءand came قبرa grave
وجاء موت وجاء قبر
وجاءand came بعثresurrection وجاءand came حشرa gathering
وجاء بعث وجاء حشر
And death comes, and a grave comes,
And death comes and grave comes
And resurrection comes, and the gathering comes,
And resurrection comes and gathering comes
واجتمعand assembled الناسُthe people فيon صعيدٍa plain
واجتمع الناسُ في صعيدٍ
والنَّهيُand the prohibition نهيprohibition والأمرand the command أمرcommand
والنَّهيُ نهي والأمر أمر
And the people assemble on a plain,
And people gather in a plain
And prohibition is prohibition, and command is command,
And prohibition is prohibition and order is order
والنارand the Fire قدalready سُعِّرتwas set ablaze وقالتand it said
والنار قد سُعِّرت وقالت
هلis there منany مزيدmore فقيلthen it was said فقيلthen it was said صبرpatience
هل من مزيد فقيل فقيل صبر
And the Fire is set ablaze and says,
And the fire is stoked and said
“Is there any more?”—then it is said, then it is said, “Patience!”
Is there any more? It was said, enough is patience
هناكthere تلقىyou will find لذيذthe sweetness of ماwhat قدalready
هناك تلقى لذيذ ما قد
جنيتyou reaped منfrom الإثموهوthe sin—and it is مرّbitter
جنيت من الإثموهو مرّ
There you will find the sweetness of what you have
There you will find the pleasures you
Reaped from sin—and it is bitter.
Reaped from sin and they are bitter
أيُّwhat مقامa plight إنif لمnot يكنthere be منfrom
أيُّ مقام إن لم يكن من
غافرthe Forgiver of كلِّall الذُّنوبthe sins غفرforgiveness
غافر كلِّ الذُّنوب غفر
What a plight, if there should be no
What station if there is none
Forgiveness from the Forgiver of all sins!
Forgiving all sins to pardon?
