ودَع العبيدَ فمُنتَهى

ودَع العبيدَ فمُنتَهى

إحسانهم ظَنٌّ يَخِيب

إحسانهم ظَنٌّ يَخِيب

And leave the servants, for the utmost

Leave the slaves be, for the height

of their kindness is a hope that fails.

Of their kindness is a misleading assumption

إن تنج من مكروههم

إن تنج من مكروههم

لم تنج من لمز المغيب

لم تنج من لمز المغيب

If you escape their harm,

If you escape their evil,

you will not escape fault-finding in your absence.

You won't escape the absent's censure

لاَحَ الصَّوابُ وإنما

لاَحَ الصَّوابُ وإنما

أسفي على الرأي المعيب

أسفي على الرأي المعيب

The right course has become clear; and only

The right has become clear, yet

for flawed judgment do I grieve.

I grieve for the faulty opinion
