الناسthe people قدalready رحلواthey have departed وأنتwhile you مقيمremaining
الناس قد رحلوا وأنت مقيم
ودُعُواand they were summoned وأنتwhile you مُحجَّبveiled محرومdeprived
ودُعُوا وأنت مُحجَّب محروم
The people have already departed, while you remain.
The people have departed while you remain,
And they were summoned, while you are veiled and deprived.
Bidden farewell while you are veiled and deprived.
صدقواthey were true to العزيمةthe resolve فاستقلتso they set out عيسُهُمtheir pale camels
صدقوا العزيمة فاستقلت عيسُهُم
وهواكwhile your desire فيin نيلattaining المنىwishes مقسومdivided
وهواك في نيل المنى مقسوم
They were true to their resolve, so their pale camels set out,
They were true of purpose so their path was eased,
While your desire to attain your wishes is divided.
While your love of attaining desires was predestined.
غَطَّتكَhas engulfed you منfrom آذىthe swell of ذنبكyour sin موجةa wave
غَطَّتكَ من آذى ذنبك موجة
فيهاin it الهلاكdestruction وماand not أراكI see you تقومyou rise
فيها الهلاك وما أراك تقوم
A wave from the swell of your sin has engulfed you;
The wave of your sin has shielded you from harm
In it lies destruction, and I do not see you rise.
In it lies ruin, yet I see you do not rise.
وتلامand you are blamed فيfor تركforsaking الحجازthe Hijaz فتنثنيthen you turn away
وتلام في ترك الحجاز فتنثني
عنfor غيرno معذرةexcuse وأنتwhile you ملومblameworthy
عن غير معذرة وأنت ملوم
And you are blamed for forsaking the Hijaz, yet you turn away,
You are blamed for leaving the Hejaz, so you waver
Without excuse, while you are blameworthy.
With no excuse, while you are accused.
أحسنdo good فقدfor indeed فارقتyou have forsaken كلَّevery إساءةmisdeed
أحسن فقد فارقت كلَّ إساءة
مهلاًtake heed فأنتfor you بعلمهin His knowledge معلومknown
مهلاً فأنت بعلمه معلوم
Do good, for you have left every misdeed behind.
Do good, for you have parted from all wrongdoing.
Take heed, for you are known in His knowledge.
Wait, for with His knowledge you are known.
لاnot أنتyou فيamong السَّفَرthe travelers الذينwho تقدَّمواwent ahead
لا أنت في السَّفَر الذين تقدَّموا
نحوtoward النبيthe Prophet ولاnor أراكI see you تقومyou rise
نحو النبي ولا أراك تقوم
You are not among the travelers who went ahead
You are not among those who journeyed ahead
Toward the Prophet, nor do I see you rise.
Toward the Prophet, nor do I see you rise.
وإذاand when بداappears لكto you درهمa dirham فيin جلَّقٍJilliq
وإذا بدا لك درهم في جلَّقٍ
بادرتyou hasten تقعدyou sit down نحوهtoward it وتقومand you rise
بادرت تقعد نحوه وتقوم
And when a dirham appears to you in Jilliq,
Whenever a coin appears to you in the sand,
You hurry toward it, sitting down and rising.
You rush to sit by it and stand.
وإذاand when أرادwills اللهGod تبليغbringing to a destination امرئٍa man
وإذا أراد الله تبليغ امرئٍ
فالعربthen the Arabs خاضعةsubmissive لهto him والرومand the Romans
فالعرب خاضعة له والروم
And when God wills to bring a man to his destination,
And if God wills to assign a task to someone,
Then the Arabs and the Romans submit to him.
The Arabs submit to him, and the Romans.
ماnot الناسpeople إلاexcept الرَّاحلونthose journeying لربهمto their Lord
ما الناس إلا الرَّاحلون لربهم
والآخرونand the others بلابلturmoil وهمومand cares
والآخرون بلابل وهموم
Only those who journey to their Lord are truly people;
People are but travelers to their Lord,
And the rest are turmoil and cares.
While others are confused, worried and distressed.
