The captive of sins stands at Your door.

He seeks acceptance, though he is counterfeit when tested.

Each day he repents, then sins again,

Whenever a passing temptation appears or touches him.

He turned counterfeit after forty, though that age

Is surely the furthest limit toward which the transgressor runs.

So he gazes with the heart's eye if lightning flashes,

And listens with the heart's ear if an unseen caller cries out.

    تحوم بمعناه النفوس الضعائف

    He soothes himself with delay, though he is deluded;

Weak souls hover around his way of thinking.

And I know full well where passion's cure lies,

And I desire it—but where is a soul that will help?

And how can I hope to recover from my passion,

When the heart does not tremble and no tears flow?

    I await repentance, though persisting in sin is my habit;

But far from it! No sweetmeat is gathered from bitter sap.

If my reason does not restrain me from error,

What good, then, does knowledge do me?

My soul directs it in ways I dislike,

And no argument of reason can restrain my soul.

So, Lord, I am undone, save for a last remnant of life,

With riches, old and new, drawn from my trust in You.

And the idler's first sin may destroy him,

Yet subtle mercies rescue him at the last.

And I surely hope for Your mercy soon,

Though I fear the evil of my deeds.
