Obey your Lord, and you will attain success.

And be mindful of Him: you will win the prize of triumph.

And leave the paths of disobedience and turn away from them,

Toward the spacious paths of piety.

And treat your parents, when they grow old,

With gentle speech or a humbly lowered wing.

And give them their due, though you cannot show kindness enough

For what they bestowed on you in every way.

They sheltered you with tenderness and protection,

    And care, morning and evening.

And they never withheld gentleness from you in speech,

Nor stinted you their generous counsel.

And they wished for nothing but you, though every soul

    Moves amid longing and choice.

And they guarded you at every moment,

With utmost care, from every side.

And they shielded you from encountering

The sun's rays or the breath of the winds.

And how many a night they joined its darkness

To dawn, groaning because you groaned.

And how many tears they shed for your sake,

Made rose-red by eyelids like wounds.

And how often, with influence or wealth, they mended

The rents caused by your shameful deeds.

And how often they offered their throats as your ransom,

To India's gleaming swords or tawny spears.

And how many a bed they forsook because you were far away,

And there choked on pure water.

How, then, can you fulfill your duty to them—and how

Is earnestness attained through paths of jest?

Yet earnest effort in filial duty is enough for us,

And no blame rests on one who strives.
